<itunes:summary>

I have a little suprise that will make your jaw drop.

¿Por fin me compraste la Wii?

Did you finally buy me the Wii?

¡No, hombre no!

No, man no! Something much better, I've bought tickets for the opera, we are going to see Caballe's daughter.

Me quede igual.

I don't have a preference.

Monserrat Caballe is one of the most famous opera singers in the world, she's Spanish and has a voice so melodious that you think you're listening to angels singing.

Honestly I don't know much about opera much less that Spain had someone so famous.

Her story is really interesting, she came from humble origins but despite this she moved to Switzerland and there she sang with the Opera de Basilea company.

¿Y ahí se hizo famosa?

And that's where she became famous?

No, in fact her fame came as a stroke of luck, at Carnegie Hall, when she had to unexpectedly substitute for Marylin Horne in Donizetti's opera, Lucrecia Borgia.

Y eso le dio la fama.

That's where her fame comes from.

Yes, at the end of the performance, she received 25 minutes of applause and the New York critics wrote this about her: "Callas Tebaldi = Caballe".

But after this cultural briefing I'm ready to go to the opera.

Sí, prepárate para escuchar Casta Diva.

Yes, get ready to hear Casta Diva.

I don't know if it's illegal but a lot of people come and sell them at the concert, whether it's because a friend couldn't come or because something unexpected came up.

 <itunes:summary>

Advanced - Tango Argentino

Tango querido que ya pa’ siempre pasó,

Dear tango, now that you're gone forever,

Like a cigarette, you've consumed the sweetness of my life

que hoy cenizas sólo son.

which today are only ashes.

¿Qué estás cantando?

What are you singing?

One of my favorite tangos called "About a Pucho."

¿Qué es un pucho?

What's a 'Pucho?"

It's tango jargon that means cigarette. Remember that in the music and in the milonga they use very particular terms.

¿Y sabes bailar el tango?

And do you know how to dance the tango?

Claro, ven y te enseño.

Of course, come and I'll teach you.

Ay no, apártate, no te pegues tanto, como te vea mi novio te mata.

Oh no, back off, don't hold me so close, my boyfriend will kill you if he sees you.

It's just a dance, but without passion you can't dance the tango. Come, I'll show you what the ballroom tango is like.

Oye, pero esto es muy sexual.

Hey, but this is very sexual.

Well of course, its roots originate from when millions of immigrant workers, mostly males, felt alone in far away lands and frequented brothels on a massive scale, they experienced longing for women, and the tango emerged as an massively erotic and popular sentiment.

All for loneliness, and all for women; so you're not just putting the moves on me?

No woman, that's how you dance it, there's nothing bad about it.

Then teach me.

Entonces enséñame.

Look, the step is one, two...

Mira, el paso es uno, dos, ...

What are you doing? What is going on here?

¡Qué están haciendo!, ¿qué está pasando aquí?

Upper Intermediate - Rules of Baseball

No entiendo nada.

Why have you brought me to a baseball game? I don't understand anything.

Dime, ¿qué quieres saber?

Tell me, what do you want to know?

You could have at least explained to me the basic rules of this game, no?

Claro.

Of course. Look, in baseball there are two teams, each one formed of nine players.

Bien, ¿y qué hace cada uno?

Fine, and and what does each one do?

Let's see, the three main positions are batter, pitcher, and catcher.

The batter is the one that carries the wooden stick, called a bat, and hits the ball as hard as he can.

The pitcher is the one who throws the ball to the batter.

And the catcher is the one who stands behind the batter trying to catch the ball in case the batter doesn't hit it.

¡Ah!

Oh! Now I understand why the catcher is wearing all the padding, just in case the ball hits him, right?

¡Esooo! ¿Qué más quieres saber?

Exactly. What more do you want to know?

Tengo otra pregunta.

I have another question. What are those white cushions that they have spread out on the ground?

Those are the bases. The field consists of four bases; first, second, third, and home.

If the team that is not batting catches the ball before it touches the ground or throws it to first base before the runner from the opposing team arrives, he is eliminated, which is called an "out."

Ah, vale.

Oh, ok. That's why they run so much to get from one base to the other.

Ya lo vas entendiendo, ¿eh?

You're starting to get it now, huh?

Sí.

Yes.

Nunca te acostarás sin aprender algo nuevo, pequeña.

You'll never go to bed without learning something new, little one.

Advanced - Torre Mayor

You know, the other day I was watching tv,

and on the Discovery channel they were showing a super interesting documentary on the tallest building in all of Latin America.

¿Cuál? ¿La Torre Mayor?

Which, the Torre Mayor?

Yes, that one exactly. At first, it seemed that the name they'd given it was too simple,

but later I discovered the reason for the name: the fact that it would be the tallest in Latin America.

Of course, you realize that the person who named the tower did it simply but logically,

since it, as the name says, the greatest of them all.

That it is. What I didn't know is that Mexico City, where the tower is located, is one of the cities that suffers the most earthquakes.

And then, I wonder, how could it occur to them to build such tower like that knowing the risk that exists?

Tienes toda la razón. ¿Te acuerdas del terremoto de 1985?

You're totally right. Do you remember the earthquake of 1985?

Cómo no, fue una catástrofe.

Of course, it was a catastrophe.

Well, there are still to this day places in the city that haven't been rebuilt, so imagine the magnitude it reached.

And even still, they go and build a tall tower, that's crazy!

I thought the same thing, but in the documentary they explained that due to this earthquake risk, the tower relies on special seismic structure and engineering.

¿Como por ejemplo?

Like what?

Look, the tower relies on 252 foundation columns at the base,

and in addition they've reinforced the structure adding something totally new and never done before, some seismic shock-absorbers.

¿Amortiguadores? ¿Como los que llevan los carros?

Shock-absorbers? Like the ones in cars?

Sí, como esos, pero a lo bestia.

Yes, like those, but monstrous.

They are 98 gigantic shock-absorbers that form part of the structure,

which move in order to minimize the impact of seismic vibrations, and keep the building from shaking apart. Hard to believe, huh?

Upper Intermediate - Hurricane Warning

Buenas tardes, mi nombre es Belén Ruiz. Estamos preparándonos para recibir al huracán Magdalena

Good afternoon, my name is Belén Ruiz. We are preparing to receive Hurricane Magdalena

and in order to do that we're here today with Adolfo Ramírez, president of the National Hurricane Service.

Adolfo, can you tell us any recommendations in order to protect ourselves from the hurricane?

Good afternoon, Belén, it's summarily important to know the latest about what's happening, you can do this through the television, radio, or internet.

¿Cómo podemos protegernos mejor?

How can we better protect ourselves?

It's necessary to take shelter at home or in a shelter during the hurricane.

We should secure the house with storm shutters, and sweep debris and anything that could fly in the wind.

It's important to be able to count on a first aid supply, right?

Yes, have your medication and a kit handy; somewhere where it won't get wet.

Due to the fact that electrical and water service gets interrupted during the course of hurricanes, we recommend that you store water and canned food, not perishables.

And also a battery operated radio, extra batteries, candles, and flashlights.

Please, remember that when the eye of the hurricane is passing over, even though it may seem calm, you should not leave your house or shelter under any circumstances,

since the wind will return with more strength from the opposite direction.

Muchas gracias Adolfo.

Thank you, Adolfo. This has been all for today from the eye of the hurricane, for Spanish Television, Belén Ruiz.

 <itunes:summary>

I think the best place to buy a house on the beach would be Costa Rica.

I don't know, there are cheaper options than Costa Rica. I think we should look for other options and compare prices.

No, look; Costa Rica is in Central America, which is close to the United States.

Also, it's surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and and in the west by the Pacific Ocean.

The coastline is enormous, and we could look for something closed to Coconut Island.

I think that in that region it would be difficult because UNESCO declared it a natural world heritage site.

So are you convinced now that Costa Rica is the best option?

Pues aún no.

Well, not yet.

Think about one thing: how many orchids do you have here at home.

Cerca de quince.

Around fifteen.

Fine, so just so you know that Monteverde, which is in the center of the country, is the most dense orchid-growing region on the planet.

¡No! ¿De verdad? ¿No me estás tomando el pelo?

No, really? You're not kidding me?

It's true, and also, we will be able to do sport fishing, which is a well-established industry.

Sport fishing companies are strictly regulated by a "catch and release" policy. The Pacific Coast is famous for blue and black marlins, sailfish and dories.

I have an idea, why don't we first go and visit, and then later we'll start to look at all that's required for purchasing property?

Me parece bien, entonces vamos a visitarlo el próximo mes.

It sounds fine, so let's go visit next month.

Agreed. I'll take charge of the flights, and you, of contacting real estate agents.

I know, quinceañeras are ridiculous. What's more, they made me be an escort! I had to learn a dance.

Jajaja, qué ridículo te vas a ver.

Ha ha, you're going to look ridiculous.

Not more than the birthday girl, with that meringue-looking dress.

Ok, but she's happy, and she feels like a princess.

Look at this ball room, it's deluxe; the dinner, the decorations, everything. They pulled out all the stops.

Yes indeed, and you can tell that my uncle is so proud of Lupita, for him as well it's an important moment in the life of his daughter.

The good thing is that the whole family came, and the party is looking good.

And the best thing is that there are mariachis coming.

The Day of the Dead has arrived, All Soul's Day and All Saint's Day!

¡Tu vecino está loco! ¿Por qué grita eso?

Your neighbor is crazy. Why is he screaming that?

Because today is the first of November, the Day of the Dead.

Ah sí, es verdad.

Oh yes, it's true.

How could you forget about the most important festivals in Mexico and Central America, even UNESCO has declared it a Human Heritage day.

Seriously? I didn't know what's so special about it, they go visit tombs, they clean them, and they put flowers.

It's not that superficial of a day. Realize that it's a tradition that goes back to our indigenous ancestors,

from which we keep "Lady Death," in her day, the goddess Mictecacíhuatl, who we now know as "La Catrina."

Well, I'll give you that. But flowers are also important, especially the Cempaxóchitl, since there's that belief that they help guide the souls of the dead.

What I like most are the offerings with the portrait of the person being remembered, the image of the souls in purgatory, and the pillar candles.

No, the best are the offerings in the houses, with plates of food, glasses of water, mezcal, tequila, moonshine, or atole.
