The accent mark rules I gave in the podcast are: 1. If a word ends in a vowel, and /n/, or an /s/, the stress goes on the second to the last syllable. 2. If a word ends in any other letter, stress the last syllable. 3. If you hear that the stress of a word does not follow the first two rules above, write an accent mark on the stressed vowel. There are a couple other reasons besides stress to write an accent mark: a) always write an accent mark on interrogatives (qué, quién, quiénes, cuál, cuánto, etc). b) a few words have written accent marks that you just plain have to memorize, and it's always to distinguish between homophones (se/sé, de/dé, el/él) and a few more.
