If you buy a DVD in Spain, you probably won't be able to play it in Canada or the United States, because DVDs and DVD players are encoded with a specific region. This can be a pain if you are buying foreign films in order to practice another language!

Mi computadora me permite cambiar de una región a otra, pero una cantidad limitada de veces. El último cambio que haces es permanente (apenas aprendí eso, y no precisamente por las buenas, jaja).

En la frase 'Cada continente tiene diferente región.' (Each continent has a different region.), ¿puede decir también 'Cada continente tiene una diferente región.'?
¿Hay una regla en cuanto a el uso de un/una con el verbo tener?

No me gustan las reglas, jeje. Tal vez si comparamos las dos frases que mencionas podemos llegar a entender la diferencia y cómo se usan.
Yo traduciría la frase que propones, "cada continente tiene una región diferente," al inglés como: "Each continent has one different region." Suena un poco raro, ¿verdad? Es verdad que se puede traducir el artículo español un/a como "a" in inglés, pero un/a es muy relacionado con el número uno y como tal, enfatiza más el hecho de que el sustantivo que modifica es uno solo.
Otro ejemplo de no utilizar el artículo indefinido en español que se me viene a la mente:
"Pedro hace muy buen punto al decir que...."
Podríamos decir, "Pedro hace un punto muy bueno al decir que..." pero no siente igual.
