Lesson Introduction

It's time to leave the safety of your homestay or hotel room, and into the Spanish-speaking world. Unfortunately, all the water you drank to keep hydrated and beat jet lag is starting to... well, let's say you've got some personal business to attend to. In this lesson, we'll hear how to ask for directions to the bathroom, and hopefully how to find our way there!

SpanishPod Challenge: Ok, from where you're sitting, where is the bathroom? ¿Dónde está el baño? Está an el pasillo a la derecha. It´s in the hallway, on the right.

Para mi es la puerta a la izquierda (no muy lejos, jeje). For me, it's the door on the left (not far away, heh heh).

Hi! Wanted to let you know that there's a problem in the expansion section of the website for this lesson - the english translations don't match up correctly with the spanish phrases, starting with "No cierra la puerta" (should say "Don't close the door"?) Hopefully it's easy to fix!

Hola! In Spain, I've found, they're generally called "Los Aseos" meaning toilets: "Damas" for women and "Caballeros" for men.

luisita, you can say it in 2 different ways: - El baño está al final del pasillo a la izquierda. OR - El baño está al fondo a la izquierda. And we already fix the expansion traslation part, thanks guys!

El baño para los hombres en esta mismo cuarto, esta la primera puerta a la izquierda. El baño para las mujeres en esta otro cuarto, esta la segunda puerta a la deretcha.

I have a question.... In the word Donde. The first d is like the sound d in English; is the second d more like the th sound as in izquierda? Thanks

npshirley, The second /d/ in "donde" is the hard [d], because it's coming off an /n/ sound. When /d/ is between two vowels, it's usually pronounced [ð]. This is a matter of descriptive phonology; i.e., it describes how Latinos pronounce it, but not necessarily how I teach it. I usually just teach that the /d/ is pronounced [ð], and leave it at that. But because the /n/ stops the airflow through the mouth, the following /d/ often just naturally comes out as [d] not so much by rule as by accident. (all you linguistics majors out there can now chime in about segmental assimilation based on point of articulation!)

a question: when do you use "disculpe" vs. "disculpa" -- in the expansion, it seems like they both mean "sorry" or "excuse me". Is one masculine and the other feminine? Ayudame, por favor!

lisamax "Disculpe y disculpa are both unisex. You can use it both when you are talking to a man or a woman. "Disculpa" is when you are using the "tu" form and "disculpe" the "usted" form. So when you talk to someone your age you say "disculpa" someone older and a stranger then "disculpe".

donde esta el bano - it is pronounced dond es elbano? It seems that you skip over a few of the consonants when you say it fluently.. When you say it slowly I hear all the pieces of the sentence.. You know what I mean? How do I know to do this?

light487, What you are hearing is vowels running together in a way that you're not used to. If you're an English native speaker like me, we have English-specific ways of pronouncing and hearing vowels. Those Englsih-specific ways of hearing do not apply to Spanish. There are some Spanish dialects where consonants "drop" but not in this dialog. You will learn to develop an ear for Spanish the more you study it, and you'll find that Spanish spelling is way, way, waywayway more systematic than English or French or even pinyin. I've explained the vowel thing many times on these discussion pages, it's probably time I did a Pa' que sepas.... on that topic. Stay tuned!

It's a bit like here in Australia.. we don't say Os-tray-lee-ya we just say Os-tray-lya.. it rolls off the tongue more naturally without the hard EE sound. So I guess it's the same thing.. more of an accent thing than anything else. I bet there are tonnes of examples where my Aussie accent does the same thing to common English. :)

This is my first time using SpanishPod and I find it really helpful and interesting. Thank you everybody! 

Thank you cyberdiva for the link to the international keyboards, which all works great on my desktop with its expanded keyboard. However, most times I am using my Dell Notebook away from home and I have not been able to find out how to produce the accented characters on a notebook keyboard. I phoned Dell and I got the usual response, "check in your user guide". I had already done so before the call ... no mention of how to form the characters.

I know I can use the Character Map method but that is too slow for me when I am typing a lengthy email in Spanish.

Can anybody help?

The correct Spanish is "Donde esta"..But I'm to understand that a word that ends with a vowel and if the next word in the same sentence starts with the same vowel..that vowel is dropped.

Lilly says (phonetically) ,  "Don des ta".

If you say "Don day esta", game over
