Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Here's another in our series of Spain's Summer Festivals. In this podcast, we'll hear about the Festival of San Fermín, better known in English as the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona. This lesson is about what to wear while running for your life from a an angry two-ton beast; specifically, how to talk about it in Spanish.

¡Hola a todos!

Today's lesson talked about what people are wearing this week in Pamplona.  For those of us that are not going to Pamplona, here's the question of the day (Answer in English or in Spanish!)

  • ¿De qué color es la ropa que llevas hoy?   What colors are you wearing today?

Yo llevo una camisa negra y unos pantalones cortos de color café.  I've got a black shirt and brown shorts.

¡Hola!

Ponerse could mean “to put on” clothes.  The sentence Te pones la ropa -  You put on your clothes.  Comes from the website http://groups.msn.com/LearningEnglish-Spanishlanguage/reflectiveverbs.msnw.

Puesto is the past participle of poner.  The past participle of a verb can be used as an addective.  This is just like English  - aquilar – to rent   aquilado – rented (aquilado and rented are the past participles)  Traigo puesta una blusa roja means "I have on a red blouse".  A literal translation would be "I bring put on a red blouse".

thanks stevestv --

makes sense, I looked in the dictionary and saw puesto defined as a place, etc. so I didn't immediately think of the past participle of poner,  which confused me. But Liliana used the word puesta, which I assume is also from the infinitive poner, and if so, is it the same puesta which is found in such phases as "puesta a punto"  (tuning), "puesta de sol" sunset, and "puesta en marcha" (starting), so do I translate these as "putting to the point" as in tuning, "putting of the sun" (sunset), and "putting in movement???" starting a vehicle?

Your are welcome.  I do not know of any paper dictionaries in which you can find conjugated verbs. My favorite online dictionary is Wordreference.com

gbfowler, Liliana used the word "puesta" because she was referring to "una blusa", that is a feminine noun, so she used the feminine past participle.

Hola JP y Lili.  Gracias por la lección. Entonces la revisión de audio no funciona.

Hoy llevo una camiseta azul brillante y pantalones cortos negros.  Por fin esta verano aqui en Victoria, British Columbia!  Que padre! (How great!) Estoy muy feliz. Me gusta llevar puestos muchos colores brillantes en el verano. Me gusta el tiempo caliente.

Yo debería haber nacido en México. (I should have been born in México.)

Estoy confundido de el uso de "pantalon" y "pantalones"  ¿Porqúe está Liliana utilizando "pantalon" y JP "pantalones"?  Estan ambos masculino palabras y sustantivos.

Gracias por esta lección :) For running of the bulls, can anyone on the streets participate in the run? I think you need to be very athletic before joining the run or else... Do you get a prize when you manage not to be hit by the bull? I read that the Spanish people think it is good luck to touch the bull? I guess it is not so “good” when the bull touches you jaja,

I've always been fascinated with "Bull Fights" especially the matadors. They are so fearless standing alone in that big arena and their suits are so beautifully crafted. I’m looking forward to more lessons about this tradition, thanks esti J

ewong, you´ll get to know everything about the running of the bulls in the coming lessons. Let me tel you everybody is allow to join this runnig of the bulls, but of course should be athletic people. Most of the runners train themselves through the year, although there is always somebody taking the risk without paying attention to the real danger it is to be out there among the bulls and risking unconsciously other runners. And as you said, lots of people think to be of good luck to touch the bulls.
