Hi all   Porbar vs. Probarse

For users who have all ready studied reflexive verbs.  Something I just learn tonight from my favorite grammar book A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish. Probar is to try something like food prueba el pastel – “try the cake”.

Probarse “means to try on”.  Like in this dialog: Pues pruébate la M, burro.

“Then try on a medium”.

Hola! Me gusta ir de compras. La pregunta del día es: ¿Qué talla eres?

Yo soy mediana, pero depende del país en China a veces soy grande.

Hey!, I like to go shopping. The question of the day is: What size are you?

I am a medium, but it depends on the country in China sometimes I am a Large.

You explained very well why probarse was used instead of probar.  Somehow I did not hear it the first time I listened to the podcast and posted the comment on the top of this thread.  Sorry about that.

stevestrv, no apologies!  This is our community, you're free to explain all the Spanish you want here!

Actually, the more you explain Spanish, the more insights you gain.  I learned that in my first year of teaching ;)

profhiggins, it looks to me like you understood it perfectly!

Remember, if someone calls you a burro, it's not the same as being called a "jackass."  The latino attitude burros is that they are stubborn and slow, but they can also be strong and helpful.  So it's not all bad.

Me parece que en esta lección uds. han introducido mandatos.  Que bueno que trataron de desilzarlos bajo de nuestros atención. ¿Es posible que nos den una lección entero de mandatos? Aunque los he estudiado muchas veces, no puedo recordar los.

¿O puede alguien que ha sucedido en aprendiendolo me comparte como lo acabó?

(It seems to me that in this lession, you have introduced commands.  How great that you tried to "slip them in" below our attention.  Is it possible to give us a whole lesson on commands?  Even though I have studied them many times, I cannot remember them.)

Or can someone who has learned them share with me how they accomplished this?

This is what a think:

By itself you would say "Hola Todos" this is a phrase not a complete sentence.

In a sentence with a verb you would use the "a"

Quiero decir hola a todos - "I want to say hello to everyone".

No problem.  The Spanish word for “my” is “mi” (singular) and mis (plural)

mi perro – “my dog

mis perros – “my dogs

so

mi talla es S - “my size is S

now

Soy de talla S” literally translates to English as “I am of size S” which does not work in English but it does in Spanish.

If I could say one last thing “S” for small works in Mexico but not everywhere.  In Colombia you have to use “P” for pequeño

Hi brandon1981

The publications engineer and I are now regenerating this lessons set of exercises to see if it clears up the problem.

In the mean time, I'm happy to say that all the lessons should be getting a new set of exercises to replace the current ones very soon; it may just be a matter of weeks.  They are finished and are testing them now.  Thanks for your patience!

Hi JP - re the new lessons, will that be for all the lessons or just new styles of excercises for future lessons?  If it's old lessons that's quite exciting as I can go review previously studied lessons and refresh my learning (and my memory)!

rachaelt, it's my intention that all of the SpanishPod lessons, past and future, get the new, improved exercises; they should be quicker to download, more stable, and a bit more helpful to learning.  We're still in the testing stages, though, so I can't say when they're going to drop.  Hold tight :)

Quick question about this dialogue...if you were talking to (or referring to) a woman would you say "burra" instead of "burro"?  That seems weird, but I saw Liliana mention somewhere else that cat could be "gato" or "gata" and that hadn't occurred to me before.  If the word "burro" is more commonly used for men, is there a different word you would be more likely to use for a woman in this situation?

March 29, 2011 from the Web.
lilianamata says

Hi Sarah

Yes you will say BURRA for a woman and BURRO for a man. The thing is that GATA refering to a woman is INSULTING. It means she is a slut. That is why I said that.

Hope I answered your question.

sarahhong in reply to lilianamata

Yes, everything is clear. I think I will stay away from the word gata. Thanks!
