am i right in my belief that one can also incorporate the idea of "could" into an active verb i.e

we could eat = poderíamos comer = comeríamos

or is the latter only ever, we would eat?

I think thats what sra Tomas was on about but unfortunately she speaks spanish a lot of the time so its difficult to tell. ;-)

It was all about efficiency and brevity, i recall but perhaps she just meant the probability past tense thing that jp mentioned

Yeah, comeríamos is we would eat.  Podríamos comer....we could eat.

He must have been 9...debería de tener 9 años.  I think your first example is also correct, but might be a bit long. 

...él tendría 9 años is he would be 9.  If he was still alive, he would be 9 today.

 Si todavía estuviera vivo, él tendría 9 años hoy.

 i see your point, i cant remember if that was my answer or something i copied from the board, i never was a good note taker. I can see now the whole lesson went over my head. i was under the impression it was all nice and simple but it seems there are hidden depths to the conditional.

Me gustaría ver más lecciones de las situaciones hipotéticas posibles e imposibles. Especialmente las difíciles como "si habrías algo mas hubieras algo".

Le está proponiendo una situación hipotética. 

¿Por qué no lo compras?

Si pudiera, lo haría.  If I could, I would.

Si tuviera que escoger...  If I had to guess...

Si fuera la verdad, sería genial.  If it was the truth, it would be great. 

Este tiempo también se usa en situaciones del pasado como éstas:

Te pedí que no le dijeras nada.  I asked you not to say anything to her.

¿No querías que te presentara a mi hermana?  Didn’t you want me to introduce you to my sister?

Me dijo que te dijera que vayas a verlo ahora mismo.
