The question of the day:

¿Cuál ha sido su concierto favorito?

Which has been your favorite concert?

I have been to a few but one of my favorites were Jamiroquai in Paris and Flans a Mexican group, I went when I was 14 years old! hahahah

But I would like to see the mariachi concert in Guadalajara, see U2 or Madonna!

Many years ago, I went to see The Grateful Dead at the Hammersmith Odeon. I was almost dead with the flu and was shivering and sneezing.

the concert was super crowded because it is only a small cinema. Although I could not move because of the  people the concert was wonderful. At the end, I was soaking wet and weak but there was a miracle,

thanks to the power of Saint Gerry (or perhaps a near-fatal bodytemperature) I no longer had the flu. although I may have started an outbreak in london

Hi

I'm a bit confused about the construction "Al de" in the phrase "Al de la banda del pueblo en la plaza".

It translates literally to something like 'to the of the..".

It probably doesn't mean that.

I'm presuming it's some form of "block expression".

Any ideas ?

Tks

Re last: Just had a thought. I was presuming that the "el" in "al" just meant "the". Could it mean "The one" so the whole thing reads "To the one of..." where "The one" is referring to the concert ? Or is that just my befuddled mind making things up ? Dave

you can probably even think of the el as him.

Quite often in english I will say things like "lets have a look at him" , "hes going to cost you x ", "ooh shes a beauty" etc. when speaking of inanimate objects and i suspect that this affectation has its roots in the practice of referring to things by their gramatic gender.

"English as she is spoke" may sound funny but its mostly to do with the verb being in the wrong tense. the "she" sounds somewhat more poetic than "it" but we can still understand that english is the subject

Bye the way, for those living in the US [ and possibly elsewhere ], there is a great Spanish learning "tool" that has just appeared at the check-out desk of most supermarkets.

It is a magazine tribute to Shakira, the Colombian cantante.

It is completely bi-lingual and has the english and spanish text side-by-side. It has the preterite, the imperfect, double object pronouns, the subjunctive [ in a zillion forms ], the imperative, idioms  etc etc.

I strongly recommend it to anyone learning spanish.

Only costs a few bucks.

A: ¿Tienes mi libro?

B: ¿Cuál?

A:El libro de español.

Hi Rodney

It is called "Shakira - Special Issue", and is a special issue of "TVyNovelas" magazine.

If you get a copy, let me know what you think.

Bye the way check out McGraw-Hill's series of books - "Side by Side" Bilingual Books.

They have Spanish on one page, English on the opposite page.

I'm reading "Historias de México" [ Stories From Mexico ] just now. Costs about 12 bucks. My reading skills have jumped up dramatically over the last three weeks, and I can now understand about 75% - 80% of what I read in Spanish language newspapers.

I also put on the closed captioning on the TV and watch one hour of Telenovelas each night.

I keep one episode [ it can be any one ] on the recorder for a week. One day I look at the closed captioning. The next day, I put it off [ same episode ] and try to understand what they are saying. It has been a huge help.

Haven't started on writing skills yet.
