Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Summer is here. We need to go shopping and find new clothes to wear. Sometimes we are such in a hurry to wear new clothes that we forget to take the tag out!

Question of the day:

¿Compran ropa nueva para el verano?

Do you buy new clothes for the summer?

I do buy new clothes, not a lot of it, just things I need or I really like.

Muuuuchas opciones! jejejeje

interesting that you wrote "a lot of it" as ropa is singular in spanish and probably maps better to clothing than to clothes.

Grammar jargon is confusing and horrible at the best of times and its only recently and with a lot of effort that i have made any sense of it at all. however, it can can be useful and worth the effort so i feel it important that it be used accurately in lessons.

As I understand things, lo is either the "direct complement" or the "direct object" they are two distinct ways of referring to the same thing. "the complement of the direct object", would be additional information pertaining to said object such as the adjective cheap

You are right DONPERIGO I used cloths at IT thinking in Spanish (la ropa). What is the correct English?

Hi Lili

You can say "I do buy some new clothes, not a lot, just things I need or really like."

To use the word cheap can be offensive because it not only suggest that an item did not cost a lot, but it also suggest that an item is not made well. So in English it would be better to say that "it's inexpensive" rather than cheap. Inexpensive is simply stating that an item didn't cost alot, where as it's not referring to value but just its price. Many people misuse the word cheap, and this causes some to be offended. Moreover, some people deliberately call an item cheap with the intention of being condescending. However, this is not possible with using the word inexpensive

Thanks for the comment. I did not know that cheap usually has a bad connotation. In Spanish BARATO can be used as offensive, depending on the context, but it usually means inexpensive.

As I also said in the podcast Latino culture usually talks about prices and money without being offended. So in Spanish you can use it without any problem. Spanish is sooo easy hahaha

Si te dices en sorpresa, "Wow, that is really cheap!" o "I need a cheap alternative" no es negativo. Pero al otra vez dices, "Bring out the cheap wine, after everybody has had a few glasses." o "This is a cheap imitation." es negativo.

yennyhernandez09 in reply to lucie-manette

Oye Amigos,

Try this, here is a very short article "out in the wild" as Jp used to say.

It is about a fashion designer that is now trying to sell some self portraits of himself.

What kind of clothes would you buy from him?

Where is he from?

Where is the gallery?

Lucie,

¿A donde eres? Estamos en Elk River.

It's pretty nice now, (save for the tornados that ripped through the state last night and killed several people) but you are right about the seasons joke.  We only have two seasons here, Snow removal, and street repair.

That one is easy to translate.

The one I have trouble with is.

Here in Minnesota we just have Winter and  a few weeks of tough sledding.

lucie-manette says
