Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Accidental poisoning is no laughing matter! Today a quick thinking friend can read the writing on the wall; no need to call the Poison Control Hotline. In the big podcast today, we have a lesson on accidental poisoning; how to spot it, and what to do... in Spanish!

¡Hola todos!

This week are shows are centered around an emergency room theme.  Hope you like them!

Pregunta del día:

¿Sabes qué hacer si te tomas la pastilla equivocada?  Do you know what to do if you take the wrong pill?

En Seattle yo sabría que hacer, pero aquí en Shanghai... ¡tengo que tener mucho cuidado no tomar la pastilla equivocada!  In Seattle I would know what to do, but here in Shanghai... I have to be careful not to take the wrong pill!

Many years ago we were in Mexico and needed to take the ferry, however my girlfriend gets seasick and she needed Dramamine.
We went into a small pharmacy and found no one that spoke English. We were having a hard time. Finally I waved them back, sat down on the floor and pretended to row a boat, pointed to her and then mimed like my "boat" was rocking, got sick and vomited over the side.
The clerk almost died laughing but we did get the medicine.
next time I'll try,

"Necesito comprar los pastillos para mareo."
"I need to buy the pills for seasickness."

Hola Misswordtraveler,  Porque no busca en el diccionario.

No he tomado la pastilla equivocada y no he necesitado un lavado.  La verdad es que yo tengo buena salud.  Pero el problema es que de vez en cuando  he olvidado tomar mis pastillas de vitaminas, calcio y aceite de semillas de lino.

Newbies

I would like to point out something that confused me. Estos is the plural of este (not of esto).  Here is an example:
Quiero este libro  (I want this book)
Quiero estos libros ( I want these books)
Esta pastilla (this pill)
Estas pastilla (these pills)

But if the noun is not used:
Quiero esto (I want this)

Esto is neuter and does not change for number.

Muchas gracias donperigo.

Hello,

This question was posted over on an advanced lesson, where we are trying hard to think only in spanish.

Please ask questions like this in the Newbie and Elementary lesson dialogues.  Muchas Gracias.

what is the different between estoy and jo and yu?

thank you for all

Estoy is a form of verb estar that is tied to the person saying the word.

it means the speaker "is "(doing something, or in a state that may change)

It is the first word of the dialogue in this lesson.

The verb Estar is covered as a vocabulary word in the these lessons.- -  Newbie - Is anyone in there? - - Newbie - Call back later

(if the condition that "is" will not change then a different verb is used. see this lesson. Newbie - I am allergic)

I think the other word you want, is yo. Yo is a pronoun, it means "I"  and is not used near as much as "I" in many other languages.  The reason for this is that the verb carries the meaning of the pronoun "on it's back, as part of the definition of the word."  For instance, Yo estoy aquí.>> I am here. and Estoy aquí.>> I am here.  The Yo is unneeded for the meaning.

jo is an interjection meaning "wow" and while it may have been spoken as part of the commentary, has not been used in the dialogs, and yu doesn't seem to be a word.

a_m_h:

¿cómo se escribe?

how itself [it] writes? (passive construction with se)

or:

how one writes? (impersonal se = subject "one" in English)

These are two different constructions which sometimes (for example in this case) take the same form, thus, one cannot say which one is actually used. Fortunately, they both mean the same for all practical purposes. From a grammar point of view, these constructions are a bit advanced; thus, you might prefer to learn these constructs as chunks: "se escribe" = "one writes".

¿Cómo te llamas?

how yourself [you] call?

The grammar of this is easier: llamarse is a reflexive verb. It works very similar to "to call oneself" in English. The other persons are:

(yo) me llamo - I myself call

(tú) te llamas - you yourself call

(él/ella) se llama - he/she herself calls

(nosotros/nosotras) nos llamamos - we ourselves call

(vosotros/vosotras) os llamáis - you yourselves call

(ellos/ellas) se llaman - they themselves call

Well, the word order in English should be different but this way you see which words correspond to each other.

Hope this helps

There is a growing glossary here at SpanishPod which can be accessed through the search engine box in the upper right hand corner of any page.

Otherwise, for an online dictionary, I usually use WordReference.com

When I am searching for words, I often use the Google translate page but find that it often does terrible Spanish, so it mainly gives me a quick list of words that may or may not be the ones I need.

I then start checking on the meanings and usage of the new words it gives me.  That is kind of fun, because I try to use the all Spanish version of Wordreference, where if I get stuck on a word, all I need to do is click on En ingles: and I can get translations and usage examples.

Mariotardi started a thread listing online dictionaries and other resources.

Cobre.

a_m_h: No, te and se are not forms of estar and ser, they are personal pronouns. You will encounter them in many newbie lessons (for example, llamarse is explained in newbie lesson A0004 "She's not Mexican" and cómo se dice is explained in newbie lesson A0008 "How do you say ...?"). I think these would be great lessons for you to learn more about "te" and "se". Also, I would like to mention that PraxisLanguage is going to start EnglishPod soon. As English is not your native language, you might consider studying those lessons, too. ;-)

a_m_h: you have probably enjoyed a 7-day trial subscription, which allows you to use the features that are included in the basic and premium subscription. After September 24 you have to pay for several of these features as discussed in the subscription information mentioned by kikuyu and I'm pretty sure that this was also written on the web page where you signed up for the trial subscription.

Well, the newbie lessons are for free as far as I know; thus, you can continue to study them. ¡Hasta luego!
