In this lesson the dude says : deme  (give me)

but in the lesson I learned earlier in going tot he market he says "Me da un kilo de manzana" which is learned is more polite that just saying "Da me."  so what is the difference between Da me and Deme..

I am starting spanish from scratch here! (well except for the first pimsleur which I thought sucked big time)  am I retarded or has this not been explained since the first lesson in the newbie series?

anyways, it's all good int he hood but I would really realyl appreciate an explanation b/c I am going nuts!

Déme and DameARE BOTHcommands (mandatos) of the verb dar, to give, but the first is formal; the second informal:

(Usted) déme:formal "give me"

(Tú)dame: informal "give me"

You'd use the 'tú' form with friends or when talking to a child. Otherwise, you'd use the 'usted' form.

Both are pretty hard-edged but both can be softened by tone of voice and/or adding a 'por favor' (please): Déme una cerveza, por favor (Give me a beer, please)

Me da is grammatically NOT a command. Here, it means literally: You (formal) give me/you are giving me.

The secret meaning in this context is something like the English: Will you give me...?

So 'me da'isonepolite way of asking for something without using the grammatical command form. (There are lots of ways to ask for things politely in Spanish and as you keep listening, you'll learn about them.)
