Lesson Introduction
Raised, cake, devil's food, old-fashioned buttermilk, jelly-filled, custard-filled... That's right, my friends, it's doughnut time, and in this lesson we'll hear how to ask for doughnuts in Spanish, for those Mexican mornings when your blood sugar needs a jump start. Later in the podcast, we'll discuss other American treats available in Mexico. Better put some coffee on...

My favorite doughnut is the "old-fashioned cake" doughnut. Glazed, plain, with cocolate, maple flavored, whatever. I love it all as long as it's an old fashioned cake doughnut. Just thinking abuot it raises my blood sugar level.
Me da asco. I have to say that I am firmly opposed to Krispy Creme. It grosses me out.
¿Qué tipo de dona prefieres tú? What kind of doughnuts do you like?
FEO!
SpanishPod Team.
Hi In the exercises for this lesson. Exercise 4 is cutoff so you can only see answers a and c
otra leccion buenisima!!!como siempre yo aprendi algo diferente.
another great lession!as always i learned something different
Me gustas las donas con glaseadas.
I like doughnuts with glazes
and to explain the curve of a surface
Is there a difference between these two donuts: la rosquilla and la dona?
the "give me 5" joke was even funnier when you consider that he didn't get what he wanted;enjoyable lesson. The picture under jp's entry looks fab.
What's the deal with the upside down question mark at the start of the sentence in the dialogue ?
Can you tell me how to ask if they have gluten free? and also the word for allergy?
thanks
Hello bababardwan,
there is no big deal with the upside down question mark: questions in Spanish start with an upside down question mark and end with a normal question mark. That's all. Fácil, ¿no? Easy, isn't it? :)
Actually, the hardest part is typing the upside down question mark. I usually hold down the left "alt" key and type "168" on the numeric keypad.
There is actually a newbie lesson about allergies.
I think he has been asked to pick up doughnuts for coffee break with his three friends.
One wanted chocolate, but they didn't have any. tsk, tsk, too bad but no skin off his nose.
¿Porque de cinco para cuatros personas?
Why 5 for 4 people?
But of course, it takes one just to have the energy and diversion to get the rest to the breakroom safely.
Para siempre, correcciones por favor.
yo como cualquier donas, me gusta todas!
¡Si yo estuviera en México y quisiera hacerme daño, no comería donas, sino churros!! ;) If I were in Mexico and I wanted to do harm to myself, I wouldn't eat donuts, but rather churros!
¡Gracias! I didn't know that you use "agotado" to mean "sold out." I always learn some here, even at the "Newbie" level. Thanks!
I remember back in pay phone it was explained that you should not say tiene to shop keepers you should say hay?
so how come tiene donas is ok.
I think, donperigo, we were tiptoeing around the double entendre of "huevos." To avoid saying, "Do you have 'huevos'?," you say "Are there 'huevos'?"
Maybe una dona is just una dona.
Interesting Anna8. And if man is in Latin America and wants to hear the song La Paloma he shouldn’t say to the musician “tómeme la paloma”
Anna8 Donperigo
I just listened to the lesson Pay Phone and it is clear that Lili and JP said that one says “are there” and not “do you have” in stores. Perhaps there are regional differences.

I like doughnuts but what really tempts me is ice-cream.
¿ Martinillo,
Thankyou so much for your most helpful reply.I love the upside down question mark;very cool;and thanks for showing me how to now type it.
I am new here… and subscribed to Spanishpod today. Before this, my experimentation with self learning Spanish didn’t go very well... even the so called practical RosettaStone didn’t appeal to me much.
Let me go through the old lessons. I will have doubt, but this community rocks… helping each other. So I will post my queries.
Wish be the very best to learn Spanish.
ncmuck, Bienvenido a Spanishpod! Welcome to Spanishpod.
I thought it was a strict rule that you never use tener to ask something like this. The classic example is asking a waiter "¿tienes huevos?" I thought you must *walways* ask hay huevos, hay Negra Modelo, etc. Yet the customer (el cliente) asked tienes, although the clerk (dependiente?) eventually said "hay glaciadas," which is more what I thought was correct. Not "yo tengo glaciadas," as if she were offering him some donuts from her own breakfast. Thanks for explaining.

i was snooping around in old conversations and i found some old chat on this subject in the elementry shopping for clothes lesson but you probably knew that because you were there :-)
Missworldtraveller,
I believe that 'dona' is more frequently used in Latin America and 'rosquilla' is more continental - from Spain. I never heard it in Colombia nor Peru. Also, I second the preference to utilize "hay donas..." rather than "tienes donas..." for the reasons mentioned above.
AY
¿Están agotadas de chocolate? NOOOOOO! :(
Que lastima!
¡Hola Spanishpod!
Hello, Spanishpod! I love sweets: cake, ice cream, cookies, donuts. My favorite donut is one with custard and icing. How delicious!
Please correct me. Thank you!

áéíóúñÑ¿?¡ç
woo hoo...just installed a spanish keyboard.¡bárbaro!
Is it correct to ask ¿Tiene donas de chocolate?
I guess it's better to ask ¿Hay donas de chocolate?
There was a discussion of it in lesson "Pay Phone".
你好 bababardwan,
I will help you on this one:
-Can you tell me how to ask if they have gluten free? and also the word for allergy?
#1 - ¿Esta libre de gluten? “or” ¿Tiene gluten?
#2 - Alergia == Alergy
I 'am Alergic to gluten =>
If male: Yo soy alergico al gluten.
If female: Yo soy alergica al gluten.
By the way keep the good work :)
blackangel,
Gracias mate. Thanks so much for answering that old question of mine, and so well explained too.Much appreciated. :)

Another question if I may...
In this lesson the dude says : deme (give me)
but in the lesson I learned earlier in going tot he market he says "Me da un kilo de manzana" which is learned is more polite that just saying "Da me." so what is the difference between Da me and Deme..
I am starting spanish from scratch here! (well except for the first pimsleur which I thought sucked big time) am I retarded or has this not been explained since the first lesson in the newbie series?
anyways, it's all good int he hood but I would really realyl appreciate an explanation b/c I am going nuts!
Thankyou
RCK
Hola RCK!
Déme and DameARE BOTHcommands (mandatos) of the verb dar, to give, but the first is formal; the second informal:
(Usted) déme:formal "give me"
(Tú)dame: informal "give me"
You'd use the 'tú' form with friends or when talking to a child. Otherwise, you'd use the 'usted' form.
Both are pretty hard-edged but both can be softened by tone of voice and/or adding a 'por favor' (please): Déme una cerveza, por favor (Give me a beer, please)
Me da is grammatically NOT a command. Here, it means literally: You (formal) give me/you are giving me.
The secret meaning in this context is something like the English: Will you give me...?
So 'me da'isonepolite way of asking for something without using the grammatical command form. (There are lots of ways to ask for things politely in Spanish and as you keep listening, you'll learn about them.)
Thank you!!!

Hola Liliana, I have just joined...thank you I always welcome corrections! I found that sentence difficult to say in Spanish but resisted the temptation to just translate it. It stretched my knowledge of Spanish!
Gracias.
