Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Nobody likes to be injured, and when a star player is unable to play, everyone is disappointed... except for maybe the opposing team. In this lesson, we'll hear how our friend is dealing with an ankle injury, how he's doing, and how long he's on the bench.

Pregunta del día: ¿Te has lastimado alguna vez haciendo deporte?

Haciendo deporte no me he hecho daño jamás. Pero mi querido novio se rompió la clavícula jugando a fútbol... ¡Qué dolor!

He tenido varios danos (o puede decir lastimes?) sobre los anos. Para mi ahora es necessario estar mas suave en los actividades porque querria hacer los deportes quando tendre mas anos. (don't know if i said that right).. I have had various injuries over the years. Now I need to be more gentle in my activities because I would like to still be active in sports when I am older.

Mi hijo es un jugador por la universidad en Phoenix. Durante la temporada, él roto sus dos menequees, pero él no sabia eso y continuaba jugando. Ahorita mismo los dos brazos están en moldes (casts?) por tres semanas mas.

Kikuyu, I normally write my responses in "Microsoft Word". Then I cut and paste into the forum. In Word, I hit the (ctrl) and( ') together. Then I press the vowel to get an accented vowel. To get an (ñ) I believe the key sequence is (shft-ctrl ~) and then an (n). Hope that helps

Dear Kikuyu you type accents in the following way: 1. Open Control Panel, and Regional and Language Options. 2. Select the Language tab, and hit the Details button. 3. Make sure Spanish (Mexico) is one of your installed services, and if it's not, add it. 4. Hit the Language Bar button, and make sure it is shown in the task bar. Now, whenever you need to type Spanish diacritics, just hit alt+shift to convert your keyboard. Then... ; = ñ = = ¿ shift+= = ¡ [thena = á [thene = é [theni = í [theno = ó [thenu = ú

Me he lastimado varias veces montado al caballo, pero nunca me he rompido un hueso. Después de caerme, me dolían las espaldas o las caderas y cojeaba unos días. ¡Cuando no lo pude más, vendí el cabllo!

memo0316, You can say "escayola" for casts, verb form would be "escayolar"= to put in plaster. Let's say: "Tiene escayolados los dos brazos".

¡Gracias Estibalitz por el verbo y sustantivo! Una pregunta mas ¿Es la palabra escayolado una palabra regionalismo o es la usa de la palabra muy común en todo el mundo latino.

According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_layout , most of Latin America (other than Mexico and Chile) uses the Spanish (Spain) keyboard layout rather than the Spanish (Latin America) keyboard layout. Any truth to that?

memo0316, you're right "escayola / escayola" usually in Spain. "yeso / enyesar" more common in Latin America.

I have a question about "deber" and "deber de". I thought "deber de" expresses a possibility, like "debo de ser las dos" - it should be two o'clock. And "should/must" is "deber (hacer algo)". And indeed, the guy in the dialogue says "debo mantener reposo", but when talking about that bit, Lili says "debo DE mantener reposo". Could someone shed some light on this problem, please?:) (Audame, ayudame, os lo ruego! - just to add some dramatic emphasis ;))

oolung, Te ayudaré, no te preocupes, jeje. As you perfectly said, "deber de" addes a bit of insecurity or improbability to the statement, "deben de ser las dos"= it should be 2 o'clock. Native speakers, we do tend to use both "deber" and "deber de" interchangeable. So sorry if we have confused you.

Tengo dos preguntas. In the podcast, toward the end, Liliana talks about fútbol games as an excuse for a party, especially "cuando es una fiesta de _______, de tu pais...." I keep listening to this sentence, but I still have no idea what the missing word is. It sounds like oo-roo-yoh. ???? My other question concerns a word I hear a lot on a Spanish radio station when they talk about los deportes. They keep using the word "technico," but I don't understand what that means in a sports context. I'd love it if someone could explain this. Muchas gracias de antemano.

cyberdiva, That word you're looking for is "orgullo;" it means "pride." So Lili was talking about those big national games where the whole country unites to cheer on their national team. As for your second question, I will let the latinos answer that one!

Muchísimas gracias, JP. "Orgullo" is a word I recognize when I see it in print, but obviously not when I hear it said. With any luck, from now on I will!
