Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Eat meat, they used to say, sticks to your ribs. Nowadays, though, not everybody chooses to eat meat. Today's lesson deals with a vegetarian, a vegetarian who's eaten but hungry again. For some, like the people in our dialog, that might be a problem, but for others, it's another excuse to eat again! Learn how to get your veggie grub on... in Spanish!

No soy vegetariana.

Vegetarian meals often contain a lot of carb. This stimulates insulin. Insulin drives the blood sugar down and makes you hungry again soon after the meal. Necesita carne.

The phrase "No es vegetariano" needs a comma. I thought she was not a vegetarian, but she is. No coma changes the meaning. Great site, very prolific, thanks, Dave

En otro contexto, se puede traducir como "Are you dying because you ate some ice cream?" O no? Gracias!

Barryhead, creo que "morirse por + infinitivo algo" quiere decir "dying to do something." En este caso, "te meures por comer un helado" = "are you dying to eat some ice cream?"

Just to clarify, in English, the expression "dying to do something" means very eager to do something. "I'm dying to meet him" means I want very much to meet him.

Almost half of the restaurants here in India are pure vegetarian (no eggs either).

In the US and elsewhere in Western World, it healthy vegetarian foods are not tasty and that drives people crazy about being vegetarian.

It´s not that difficult to be vegetarian, when I was in India, I ate  meat or fish during weekends only.

I'm not a vegetarian, yet when I go abroad I usually have to be one, temporarily. As a Muslim, any meat I eat must be 'halal'. Pork is not, chicken is, but the chicken must have been slaughtered the Muslim way for it to be 'halal'. The slaughtering differs too, from the 'kosher' way, and so the best way to go when I'm abroad is, really, the vegetarian way. I'm just wondering, though, whether cheese is 'halal' as it contains rennet. The rennet could have come from cows, not pigs, but does the cow have to die first for the rennet to be obtained from it? If it does have to, then there would still be doubt as to whether it had died the 'halal' way for cheese to be 'halal', too.

Check cheese labels for Vegetable Rennet or Vegetable Enzymes.  If it just says "rennet" or "enzymes" don't eat it unless you are willing to take the risk.  If it's animal rennet the animal is killed first (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet).

May 29, 2010 from the Web.
donperigo says

Correct structure? I know there are many ways to express a thought in Spanish, so it's hard to know which might be grammatically correct, or sound the best to a native. I've decided to go with the little I know and improve by trial and error. I know the error part has happened when I get a blank stare from the one receiving the trial.

January 1, 2011 from the Web.
jen_not_jenny says

You're right, djcchicago, MUERO is conjugated as the first person present indicative, denoting "I." To say "me muero" instead of simply "muero" emphasizes that this dying is not the speakers fault, as it were. I'd actually say it is marginally more common to treat MORIR as a reflexive verb than not.

A few more examples of this:

Me muero por volverte a ver. / I'm dying to see you again.

She's dying to travel to Europe.

Se murió en el '95. / S/he died in 1995.
