¡Hola todos! So what do you think? Should Mauricio go for it? Is it worth the risk? I thought he had a good thing going with Alicia... and Alma, for goodness sakes, what about Alma? Check out our discussion on piropos, (pick-up lines).

Yo saldría con Marlon Brando cuando era joven, Cary Grant cuando vivía y con Daniel Craig. Me encantan! todos tienen clase y son muy varoniles. I would go out with Marlon Brando when he was young, Cary Grant when he was alive and with Daniel Craig. I love them, they are all classy and very masculine.

I like the show spod is putting on.... both hosts spanish is great... could the female host tone down the 'I am annoyed by you ignorance attitude' a little though, I have lived in South America for long streches and out of Mexico all the time however the general attitude seems to take place. its the diva pose, ok its great and it part of the culture, in teaching though it can turn people way off.

A great lesson, as usual. I especially appreciate Lili's cultural comments :) One question: would it be okay to say: Ademas tiene UN novio? Would there be any difference?

oolung, it's not correct to say "tiene UN novio", unless you're living in a society where it's normal to have more than one so you have to specify how many boyfriends do you have, je.

¿Qué Tal, mis amigos? The verb gustar, I thought you only use "gusta" or "gustan" depending on if what you like is single or plural. ¿Por lo tanto, por qué no dice en la frase "Creo que le gusta" más que "le gusta[s]" o "a ella le te gusta". Estoy confundido un poco. ¡Gracias!

Esti, thanks. If I explain any more I'll confuse everyone including me. I really do understand your examples. In the past, I was taught you should not conjugate gustar like normal "ar" verbs, but this lesson made me do some more research and there are certain instances where a regular conjugation (gusto, gustas) is grammatically correct. Gracias, mi amiga, aprendí algo nuevo. ¡Perfecto!

shep1582, "Gustar" means "to give pleasure to," and many teachers and textbooks don't want to mess with all the persons of that verb... partly because it's used in 3rd person 90% of the time, but also partly because in the other persons, it can be a little... well.... let's say "gustar" might also mean "to be a turn on." Which is language I just don't need in my classroom. However, I never lied to my students and said "you can't use "gustar" in first or second person....." lailaash, Learning the subjunctive takes some explicit instruction; I'm developing some new resources so that we can provide that specific instruction!

I am glad to hear you enjoy our lessons because sometimes it can be difficult to pick what cultural issues are the best to discuss. Any ideas for a show or any other questions, please feel free to ask anything! It’s is pretty hard for me to feel offended when you are trying to explain stereotypes or clichés they are part of every culture! :)

bonito23: Algunas correciones:

No, no puedo tener una cita con Alicia porque ella tiene a alguien. ("why?" is "¿por qué?" but "because" is "porque" (one word); "haber" is almost exclusively used as a auxiliary verb to form the composite tenses; if the object is a person you need the preposition "a").

Yo tendría una cita con Niccola Ciccone porque me gustaría que Niccola cantaría con la guitarra y a mí me gustaría cantar con él.

One more correction martinillo and bonito

Yo tendría una cita con Niccola Ciccone porque me gustaría que Niccola cantarA con la guitarra y a mí me gustaría cantar con él.

We  use the subjonctive, because is something you wish for, you would like. So it would be porque me gustaría que Niccola cantara or cantarASE.

I recently learned about "Tener pegue", which means something to the effect of having sex appeal, or good luck with the ladies.

Although I'm not sure if this phrase is used exclusively for men, or if it can refer to someone who has luck with the opposite sex in general.

Also, here's a couple of links that might help you get a better understanding of the verb Gustar...

Oh, yes, Liliana, I completely agree with you regarding Cary Grant! He had that look in his eyes where it seemed he found life endlessly amusing. What about James Stewart? He also had that classy look. If you don't know who he is, he starred in Rear Window, Vertigo, Rope and many others. Both were brilliant actors, really. The only living actor that I feel has the same class as the stars of the 50's and 60's is George Clooney.

I know who James Stewart is , I really like him! That is one thing that I miss now in movies. There was so much elegance and they lookes so masculine back then. This is why I enjoy MAD MEN, specially John Hamm...I agree Clooney is handsome, but a bit overrated.

Hehe, it's cool that you know who he is. I agree Clooney is a little overrated as an actor, but he's still way above the norm today. I've tried to like "Mad Men", I love the style, but I have a hard time caring about any of the characters. They all seem to have this shallow and egotistical streak about them. Products of their role in society at the time, I suppose. ¿Debemos hablar español, no? Jeje.

Si habla en español, más bien escribe. A mi me gusta ver como se desarrollaba el consumismo en los Estados Unidos. Tienes razón es difícil que te gusten los personajes. No soporto a Peggy y a Betty. Pero me gusta mucho Don Draper y su asociado, el de pelo blanco! me hace reír.
