Hey newbies!

So we are taking a cab today!

The question of the day is: How much is the cab fare where you live?

Here in Shanghai the cab fare starts at 11rmb which is 1.6 USD for the first 9 minutes. For example from my house to work I pay 19rmb (2.7 usd) and it´s 15 min cab ride, pretty good right!

Es muy barato! De mi casa a donde me gusta de salir, es cerca de $20 NZD (que es cerca de $12 USD). Es un viaje 15 minutos también. Qué caro!

Sí lili, ¡es muy barato! en inglaterra, tenería que pagar más que doble por el mismo viaje.

No idea on the cost here. Which is the situation Alex the main character in "Ciudad de los Bestias" runs into when he arrives in New York and needs to get to his Grandmother's apartment.

There is a lot of non-newbie stuff in this sentence imperfect and conditional tenses but the part I found amusing and pertinant here was the final phrase, - la carrera en taxi-  Carrera often means career as in occupation or race as in auto or horse race.  Here it means the journey or course and somehow race seems appropriate, at least for some cabbies.

No sospechaba a qué distancia estaba su apartamento ni cuánto costaría la carrera en taxi.
He didn't have a clue how far it was to her apartment nor what it would cost for a taxi ride.

En mi pais, los joferes de taxi no tienen muy buena reputacion. Especialmente en Praga. Es que tienen diferentes precios para los extranjeros. Pero pienso que esta mejorando (I am not sure about using the subjunctive here...?).

Un viaje de 15.minutos cuesta aprox. 200 CZK, que es +/- $10.

Corrections of my spanish are welcomed :-) Thanks.

Welcome lesaley!

Via the menu at the top or the bottom of each page go to "Lessons" -> "Channels" -> "Newbie" and start with any of the 74 newbie lessons. They are not ordered, thus, you can listen to whatever appears interesting to you.

If you already know some Spanish you might want to have a look at the other channels, too.

The help pages discuss all the features of the site.

Have fun and welcome again! :)

lesaley: That's not an easy question because all Newbie lessons are supposed to be equally difficult (there is no progression within each channel). I guess many users start with the lesson that was first published: Are you ready yet? Personally I don't think that the lessons were produced in the order they were published. My guess would be that the lesson My name is... is one of the lessons that was recorded very early (maybe the first). And then there are personal favorites, my favorite newbie lesson is Smells good. Hope this helps

Me acuerdo con La Piedra about el traffico in Ciudad Mexico.

Disculpame para mi espanol malo (that's why I'm on this site!) and my keyboard doesn't have an accent key.  I love this site because it gives real world Spanish lessons.

sybiljv,

Windows, Mac, and Linux all have easy to use alternate keyboard layouts that you can turn on and off with hot keys.

Special Spanish Characters (ñ, á, ó, etc.)

You might wonder how to type this Spanish special letters or accents. Here is a link to a web page where they explain this very well: http://faculty.weber.edu/tmathews/grammar/Compmark.html

En mi país, el taxi es P30 = US $ 0.625 para el primero 5kms, y Php2.50 = $ 0.05 para los próximos 500 metros, y otro pago para el tiempo de espera Php2.50 = $ 0.05.Tiempo de espera de taxis no está en marcha en trafico

desde mi casa a la oficina de 12kms, pago  Php150= US $ 3.125 si no estoy "ripped off"

= como se dice " to be ripped off" en espanol?

I have taken a taxi locally, but it was over 30 years ago.
I had been hired to design, "Dark of the Moon" for a high school production. I normally took the bus, but I was late, so I called the taxi. With eyes on the meter I watched it devour almost all my money.
I stopped the taxi 3 blocks short of my destination, and gave the guy all the money I had except for bus fare home.
I arrived two minutes late. The director arrived twenty minutes late, he took the bus.
