Fixed now, thanks for your patience!
Hi - I understand the structure in the following Spanish sentence. - Te regalo esta alcancía -
Except for one thing. Why is regalo placed where it is at in the sentence?
RJay11: The sentence written like that means "I gift to you this piggy bank." In this sentence "regalo"/"gift" is being used as a verb, "regalar"=to gift. It's conjugated into the first person singular -- Yo regalo. It's like a simpler way of saying "I'm giving you this piggy bank as a gift".
Yo te regalo (i gift to you). Often in spanish the Yo is dropped.
Yo regalo= I gift/give as a gift
Yo te regalo= I gift to you/give to YOU as a gift
Te regalo (i gift to you/I'm giving to you as a gift)...esta alcancia (this piggy bank).
I hope I didn't confuse you. Maybe Yenny can do better.
thanks Amanda - this is very good and helps a great deal. when i curser under "regalo" it indicates it is a Noun. That really throws me off. I forget that some words can also be a verb. This helps me understand more about the placement of words in other sentences i have been studying.
thanks for helping clear up my muddy waters.

De nada! I figured you were thinking of it as a noun because we don't have a similar verb in English. You can "gift" something, but it's hardly ever used as a verb in English.
Spanish and Chinese mentality are similar in expecting children just to study. I think this can be a little bit unbalanced because it does not fully prepare one for practical handling of money, the working world, and solving real life problems.
¡Que coincidencia! Hace una semana publiqué una entrada en mi blog sobre chanchitos...
What a coincidence. A week ago I published an entry in my blog about piggybanks.

Hola light487,
Are you talking about the trilled 'r'? If so, check out this old 'Pa' que sepas'. The comments might be helpful too.
¡Suerte!
