Hi everyone!  It's time for the question of the day!

As this is a Newbie lesson, feel free to answer in English or in Spanish :)

  • ¿Hoy qué vas a comer? What are you going to eat today?

Bonus question for Elementaries and above:

What was in your lunch as a kid?

Today I brought meatballs with rice.  As a kid, I always bought my lunch at the cafeteria.  Blech!

I'm eating a hamburger made of turkey and, after that, nothing else!

When I was a little girl I used to bring to the school  a sandwich and a fruit for lunch.

Today I ate spaghetti with meat sauce and a small salad.  When I was a little girl, I usually walked home for lunch. Often my mother would make me a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup. With luck, there would also be a cookie or a cupcake.

Today, I had a toast with almond butter, wild berry jam and slices of banana.  When I was younger, I always forgot my lunch so I bought food at school (not always as good as from our house).

"Hoy comí" (or he comido), the imperfect "comía" it is used to tell a habit in the past, something like "I used to eat". So in the same way you shoul say "siempre me olvidaba" and not "olvidé" because it used to happened frecuently in the past.

"Vamos a ir", with V.

There was a year during my highschool days when I acted rather strangely. I would always ask my friends to give me some food, I don't know why (I always brought my own lunch). It's just that when I saw them at the cafeteria eating something yummy, I would always look at them with my sad eyes and after a moment they would break down and ask: you want some? It's not even like I didn't have money - I was simply hungry all the time!

Y ahora voy a comer algo...

I do not know what I shall eat, I'll check the refrigerator.

As a child, I sometimes bought food in the cafeteria, but most of the time I walked a kilometer home and ate lunch with my mom, dad and my little brother.

Breakfast AND lunch from my mother. Eat your heart out, JP. ;-)

school dinners were ok if you like gristle , dry potatoes and cabbage followed by tapioca pudding

one of my favorite phrases harks back to those distant days of packed lunches

when you suddenly notice a bad smell of boiled eggs and rotten fruit you can ask

"ok who has opened their lunch?"

That´s too bad, Donperigo.

I'm sorry the lunches were so bad.

I had the good fortune to go to a school with three excellent cooks and a home economics instructor who wrote the menus for the cafeteria.

The lunches were usually delicious.

I worked in the school kitchen for four and a half years and got my lunch for free.

When I was a kid the lunch my mom prepared was delicious, cucumber with lime, sandwiches, and burritos, yummy. I never bought anything at the cafeteria, because it was junk food.

fast food arrived after i left school and now there is a movement to return nutricional food to school canteens.

consequently the children are very resentful, they want their chips and pizza. They cant leave the campus during the day so their fat mums pass bags of chips over the fence to the chubby little angels. it is very strange and sad.

in truth, school dinners in the 60s were not too bad.  Meat was expensive and therefore, in my schools, not the best. i recall a lot of spam fritters

perhaps this explains why i dont like meat today

Well, I'll tell you all what I'll eat tomorrow, since it's already night time and I've already eaten.  It won't be a big thing, maybe a turkey sandwich with melon and some water.

When I was a child, I actually liked lunch from school.  I didn't like when my mom always made tuna or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches...and the thermos never kept my juice cold.

Hola!

Tengo una pregunta, por favor!

Why do you use "sus" to mean "your" and not "tus"

I think that "sus" means "their".

Do you call the children formal?

Gracias!

aminco,

if she was talking to just one child it would be "tus".

because she is talking to more than one kid she is using "sus"

in latin america they use third person plural when talking familiar to more than one person

As a child i ate little at school, but last night my mother was cooking ....

that was then BUT this is now

there have been several misunderstandings of late. might i suggest we all include an english translation in our posts, especially in newbie and elementry lesson conversations as this creates a more inclusive site for those whose spanish isnt up to the job yet and a way of cross referencing to ascertain meaning in the event of punctuation problems etc.
