Del Taco al Tango - Mexican Telenovelas: Amor sin destino (parte I)

So, folks, did you enjoy our SpanishPod telenovela? Some of you may have understood more of the action than others. We will provide you with the transcript and translation in a few days, but first let's see what you were able to understand! Newbies: How many characters were speaking? What are their names? You're not gonna believe me, but one of the participants in an email discussion I subscribe to actually writes Mexican soap operas (or did at one time). His name's Armando Saldaña Mora and he knows more about dramatic construction than most anyone I've seen -- even has a book out on the subject.

I can't wait 'til you guys put the .pdf transcript up for download. I managed to follow the first passages of dialogue, but then I started cracking up at the melodrama (you're supposed to be at the office, whose pants are those, etc.) and lost my ability to concentrate as hard as I would have to in order to follow along and understand very much. while I was laughing, the dialogue escaped my comprehension and never returned. I'm sort of stuck at a nonexistent SpanishPod level, Advanced Elementary, and that isn't goodenough to understand what I'm hearing the first time around. Or the second, without having heard some translation and explanation before I listen again. Just confessing. But I think it's a great idea to produce this telenovela. Someone here may recall me saying that one of my most fruitful spanish learning experiences was to tape and watch all 52 episodes of the language course produced by a U.S.educational foundation using Mexico City talent, called simply Destinos. There was a workbook and everything. Anyway, this is a wonderful project and I hope you keep at it, adding episode upon episode. By the way, I'm not a scholar of Mexican film history, but I'd like to add one comment to the explanation that production costs are notably inexpensive in el Distrito Federál. And that is that, although the Mexican film industry has gone through many difficult times, recently rising again in terms of visibility and respect with international exposure of the work of new young directors, some of whose work Liliana has mentioned,it's the home of the legendary Churubusco studios, which was the home to the industry for many years much as the Dom Kino (La Casa del Cine/The House of Film) was the home of much legendary Soviet era filmmaking in Moscow. So it's not as if a few clever producers, directors and actors just happen to have decided to make teles and peliculas in Mexico city. It's one aspect of a grand old gradition there. I think what I'm saying is fairly accurate. Trying not to leave out anything critical, like mentioning that the system has slumped a few times, financially and creatively,but that it seems to be recovering again, hoy en día. Finalmente, drito ¡Bravi! to cast, crew, writers and producers. I look forward to listening to Episode 1 many times after learning the translation in order to learn from it and enjoy the story. (that's the Italian plural for "bravo" that fits here. It's actually correct and used by many that way, same as "brava" is correct to applaud a woman's performance. A lot of "American" music fans don't understand that, but, whatever. Does anyone shout the proper Italian gender and number at Mexican performances of, I don't know, opera? Lucha libre? Just kidding, sort of. I'm sure there are some colorful cheers from the audience at a wrestling match, and a care for Italian grammar is not likely to be the order of the evening.

Classic! Are you sure that's a typical plot twist at the end though? Can't wait to see what happens next...

Fernando Tabasco: ¿Dónde aventé mis pantalones? Where did I throw my pants? Carlota Magdalena: Fernando Tabasco, ¿de qué pantalones hablas? Fernando Tabasco, what pants are you speaking of? Claudio Rigoberto: No puedo creer tu engaño, te maldigo, maldigo el día en que me enamoré de ti! Eres una cualquiera I cannot relieve your deceit! She wakes up and wants to be with Fernando, but discovers he and Claudio have been living together and have adopted four charming children.

Not sure if this has been covered by anyone before, but can someone explain to me the phrase 'eres una cualquiera' meaning 'you are trash?' When translated to english it means something like 'you are anyone' ...

This is a very nasty thing to call a woman.  As you said eres una = you are a.  Here cualquiera means a woman who will sleepy with anyone, I am sure you can think of an English word for this.

Pienso que el amor de toda manera en la vida no puede tenir destno, porque no hay nada mas detras y despues. Es un "stop aqui estamos al final". . Es porque prefiero la amistad, que tiene algun destino desconocido. Nunca se sabe como una amistad va a evolucionar. (si no entiende lo que escribo, es normal.
