Del Taco al Tango - Life in Los Ángeles

Wow.  So good.  My new favorite by far, great, great subject!

I have lots of Mexican friends here in Boise and we talk about this stuff all the time, and like Lili and Leo were saying, some of them dominate both languages equally and can combine them no problem.  So cool.

I noticed right away Pedro's accent.   I would have guessed him an American that learned Spanish if I didn't know up front of his Mexican heritage.  You could really here it in the way he pronounced his r's and even Los Angeles.   Really interesting.

Once in a restaurant I started asking a Mexican girl some questions about how you say this and that and she told me in perfect English that she was just learning Spanish too, that she didn't know exactly what I was looking for, couldn't answer me.   That was amazing as I just assumed that she spoke Spanish.  It was cool though cause every time I went back she would know some more and we would practice.

Any more you just can't tell either way.  Last weekend two Mexicans showed up on my soccer team that I hadn't seen before, I saw them chatting in Spanish during warmup so I joined them and after about 10 minutes one of them asked me where I learned Spanish, was no big deal.  Neither one of them blinked an eye when I approached them in Spanish, we just started talking.

I grew up in California and one of my closest friends who was Mexican American refused to learn Spanish.(His mom was a Spanish language teacher!) He was enthralled with Japanese culture and ended up learning Japanese and living in Tokyo. (he is an anime geek)  

My other good friend who was/is Japanese American never learned Japanese but studied Spanish.  We traveled in the Yucatan together.  Now she runs a restuarant with her partner and her Spanish comes in much more handy than Japanese!

I work in a vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco and there is definitely a special kitchen Spanglish in the States.  Its quite embarrassing actually.  Its a true regional mezcla that would not be understood out of context.  I also hear the Mexican American and Chinese American teenagers on the bus in S.F. speak a strange blend of English with their native language. They move back and worth seamlessly without effort. Its kind of cool but makes me laugh. They will be speaking in Spanish and then say, cool girlfriend or my bad or ya know....

I can relate to the "kitchen spanglish".  I work with wood and we have a lot of equipment.  There are many words that just don't translate and you'll see heads turn when the word "chopsaw" or "moulder" comes flying out of a Spanish conversation.

I think this topic is so interesting. We tend to forget that we live in a world where cultures mix so easily. We see all this new generations of mixed background and culture. I will try to invite more people with the same background.

It was a cool topic for me and Leo, because we can not relate to Mexican Americans. We have been in the States and I lived there for some time, but it is not the same, English is still my second language.  So I like to hear the experiances from other people learning their heritage language.

As for you and Leo, both of your English is really good, especially for learning it as a second language.  Esti too for that matter.  Your pronunciation though really stands out Lili, it's really good. 

Every time you make a reference to a movie, even older ones (revenge of the nerds) I know you've picked up a lot of the coloquial speech that way, it really comes through.

Thanks for the comment. I try hard to learn as much as I can, so what I do is read a lot of magazines, books and above all watch movies. They help so much, sometimes when I don't understand a word I just pause it and look for it in my dictionary. This helps.

So my advice is watch movies in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. It helps a lot!

And today, almost all new releases have the option of Spanish audio or at least Spanish subtitles. 

I watched Changeling last week with Angelina Jolie and it only offered French as an alternative to the English audio.

So I put the film on French (can't understand a word) and read the entire film with the Spanish subtitles.  This way you don't get the English distraction. 

Then I saw A Flash of Genius and it offered Spanish audio, they did a really good job with the Spanish.

I would love to be able to watch Spanish movies with Spanish subtitles, but it's hard enough finding Spanish movies with English subtitles!  There is not a large enough Spanish speaking population where I live.  In fact that's the one thing I'm finding really frustrating - finding a native spanish speaker to practice with. 

I found this lession absolutely fascinating!  Until I visited LA last year on my way to Central America, I rather had no idea that Spanish was so widely spoken in the States.  I was amazed that so many public announcements / signage etc were in English and Spanish.  It must make it so much easier when you are learning another language to have it around you.  It's times like that that I realise just how isolated our country is.

The best way to get this movies is to buy them online in DVD. If you want I can give you a list of my favorite movies. This way you can see them with Spanish subtitles.

What u say is very true! In the USA more and more people speak Spanish. There are over one million enrolled in the Spanish language in the USA! Imagine!

Lili - yes please!  I would love to have a list of your favourite movies.  I try to buy Spanish language movies when I see them, but you are right, buying online is probably the best way to go.  I have bought:

• Y tu mama tambien
• Volver

And recently watched:

• The crime of Father someone (can't remember! but fantastic, and sad)

Hola rachaelt, is a service like netflix offered in your country where you can pay a fee for unlimited dvd rentals each month that are delivered to your mailbox?

We get as many as we want, and every time we return one, they send the next one of of the list that we've created.  Different plans let you have more or less in the house at a time.

Hola hypersport - yes, we do have those kinds of DVD rental companies here, but it\'s really hard to get movies in Spanish, and impossible to get them with Spanish subtitles.  We don\'t have a very large Spanish speaking population, so it\'s quite hard just working out what they\'ve got in stock in Spanish....but a good idea, so maybe I\'ll check it out.  They all have free trials.

El no hablaba absolutamente nada de Español, habia perdida el idioma, y su abuelo, obviamente Mexicano, no hablar Inglés. Entonces dice que le daban mucha pena porque no se podía comunicar con su abuelo. Y me dice que el perdió el idioma a causa de que los papas como que lo... no lo obligaban pero le decian que aprendía y aprendía el Inglés Inglés al grado que perdió el idioma. ¿Tu tienes amigos en la misma situacion que pierden el Español?

Pedro: Sí

Lili: ¿Sí?

Pedro: Ya ahoren les, le... hay tanto o Latino en los EEUU que la cosa ha cambiado un poco, pero por ejemplo cuando yo (?) iba en la primaria, mi amigo Juan, se llamaba John, yo me llamo Pedro, pero me llamaba Peter o sea una... uno o tiene que ser cosa parece si hablar dice era otra situacion. Cuando tenia quince años esta viviendo con mi papa en la ciuadad que se llama Bishop. Es de en el... en California con una poblacion de quince mil... diez mil... quince mil (  ), no? Y es de una vez que llegó la inmigracion. A todos con pure morena, vamos.

Lili: ¿De verdad?

Pedro: Le verdad. Entonces yo estaba caminando o sea yo nací en los EEUU todo eso y estoy caminando frente de la prepa... la preparatoria donde iba. Y que llego este la policia en la patrulla me dijo \"Ay a donde vas you\". Pues que yo voy a mi casa. \"¿Y tu papa, de donde es?\" Pues, de Mexico. \"¿Y tu?\" Que como como como...

Pedro: Y es el siguiente día es... era como una... una broma para muchos... para los (angelos) y estar para los (?) o sea los indígenas de (?) porque obviamente ¿ellos se parece en nosotros, no?

Lili: La palabra malinchista es cuando... viene Hernán Cortés llega a lo que el nuevo mundo y conoce a la malinche. Entonces la malinche por alguna razón se pudo comunicar con el y fungía como traductora. Entonces para muchos Mexicanos, sobre todo, veímos a la malinche como una traicionera. Por que? Porque se fuera del lado de... de los blancos, como nosotros les llamamos, los españoles, los de la casta mas alta y les ayudaban entonces de alli viene el termino malinchista, de la malinche. La traicionera como le llaman.

I welcome any and all corrections you might have- as I was working on this there were plenty of things I just couldn\'t understand, but wrote them down as I heard them anyway. It was a great exercise, one I highly recommend  to everyone. (I constantly have one of last year\'s Spanishpod jingles going through my head- \"Make 2008 the year you finally learn Spanish!\" I didn\'t make it last year, but I\'m hoping this year is the one. : )

Vivo en LA. La cultura mexicano está en todas partes de la ciudad. Tengo dos amigos Mexicanos-Americanos. Uno habla español, pero no puede escribirlo bastante bien. Y la otra es editora en español (y en inglés) y no puede hablar español muy bien!

Muy interesante, es importante que ustedes nos cuenten sus experiencias. Creo que hay toda una cultura muy propia del México Americano, especialmente en L.A. Por eso se me hizo muy interesante hablar con Pedro. Espero poder invitarlo a otro show o a personas que comparten el mismo background.

Very strange, I think the reason that the 15 min timer is not working for editing our posts, is that the time listing for each post is seven hours fast.

At the time that I post this, conversations page says that lili posted the above notice 2 hours ago. but the time listing on this page says it was posted 9 hours ago.

I also noticed the same thing when I posted about the parrot. It immeadiately said I had posted the story 7 hours ago.

ergo. when you post, the program looks at the clock and says well, this was posted 7 hours ago, so s/he can\'t edit it anymore.

On the subject of heritage spanish speakers in the US that were short-changed on read\'n and writin\'  spanish  by lack of decent language classes in US schools.  Quite by chance I discovered a wonderful text book, written in the US for just such people.

It was written as a catch up on your grammar and culture book, a college entry level class in spanish usage and grammar.  I don\'t think you can beat the interactive sort of experience here, but if you are looking for a book to keep in the john, or study at the beach. . .  Check out \"De Una Vez!\"

This is not a newbie level book, if fact it assumes quite a bit of spanish, it is all in spanish except for a few footnotes comparing languages.  Intermediate/upper intermediate level sort of stuff here.

The lessons are a lot like those the Spanishpod team do. Taking short interesting stories or situations and building the lesson around them, breaking down the grammar and the usage.

It organizes the book around the various spanish speaking groups in the US, discussing the heritage of each, offering up some of the jerga especial para las comunidades. It builds lessons around successful spanish speaking artists in each community. Which is how I found it. My friend Rocio was the one chosed as an example of a successful mexican artist.  I heartily recommend it.

As an added benefit for me at least, Lili, Esti and Leo read me the stories in my minds ear, and somehow all the grammar comment sounds like JP.

Me gustó mucho este capitulo de 'del taco al tango'. Yo soy mexican-americano tambien como Pedro y me creci en un pueblo como una hora fuera de los angeles.

Soy como el amigo que Liliana hablo de en que cuando yo era nino, hablaba nada del espanol y me di mucha pena tambien porque yo no podia comunicar con mis abuelos. Lo loco es que ellos hablaban nada salvo el espanol.

Hablando de Malinche, me hicé un informe sobre Malinche.  Yo encontré que hoy en día las feministas Mexicanas piensan que Malinche es responsable por la abusa de mujeres de sus esposos.

Speaking of Malinche, I did a report about Malinche.  I found an obsure bit that said, today, Mexican feminists think that Malinche could be responsible for some of the spousal abuse of Mexican women.  

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I thought it was interesting.
