Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Nobody learns well on an empty stomach! We better get something to eat! This lesson will help you express your hunger, and maybe even help you suggest a restaurant. Whether you want Italian food (like the people in our dialog) or sushi, a bowl of cereal, whatever... this lesson will get you one step closer to your next meal. And that is a good thing.

hi jhwpeters and jbmyoung, I just checked the bittorrent link and everything seems to be working fine. The Old SS Lessons page suggests using Bitcomet but I used Bittorrent 6.0 to download it, and it was fine. The torrent is 367 MB so it might take a little while for your computer to download, but once you get it, it's every SpanishSense lesson ever recorded!

fimperial, Hay muchas tienditas y supermercados por aquí, pero desgraciadamente no hay Trader Joe. Oye, si quieres decir "groceries," se dice comestibles. Trying to say "***grocerías" will actually you groserías, which actually means "rude things" or "appalling things." And yes, in grad school my friends and I used to say "***groserías" for groceries because we knew what it meant, and it cracked us up. But don't tell anyone I told you that. Stick with comestibles.

Hi JP! Just wanted to say that the bf and I have officially begun learning Spanish. Of course our first lesson had to be on food, it's an important subject as I sure you'll agree with me. ;-) One thing I noticed about the dialogue is how 'yo' was pronounced. Liliana seemed to pronounce the y like dj and you like y in English. Is this some sort of regional difference or is there another explanation? I'm sorry if this question has already been asked before in another thread. And by the way, your intro music is so cool! It makes me want to dance... :-)

lunetta, Congratulations to you and the bf! That's a big step! :) My answer to your /y/ question: [y] is correct, [dy] is correct, [dj] is correct... Latinos don't differentiate those sounds the way American English speakers do. Somebody my try to tell you that [y] pronunciation is more Mexican, and [dj] sounds more European, and [dy] sounds more educated, or whatever; the truth is the same speaker might make all three of those sounds for /y/ in the same breath and not really realize it. Not really an issue. Argentinians, however, tend to pronounce the /y/ as [sh], which is also not a big deal, just sounds Argentinian. American English also has sound variations that native speakers don't differentiate; for example, the /l/ in "lamp" is very different from the /l/ in "mall." A Catalan speaker might notice the difference. The /t/ in "top" is phonetically very different from the /t/ in "stop" and the /t/ in "water." A Thai speaker might notice the difference. However, in most cases, native speakers of American English do not notice the different kinds of /t/s, or the different kinds of /l/s, and if you mix them up, people will probably not even notice.

Hola Todos,

I like to eat spicy foods. I also like cooking and making food. My favorites to amke are Italian and Mexican...although I make up a lot on my own, with the flavors of each.

JP & Lili, I have a question on how to say something.

"We are going to eat dinner at La Carreta, do you want to come?

Is that "vamos a comer a..." o "Estamos yendo a comer..." o "Estamos comiendo a..." or algo mas? How would I say thhe entire question?

I have a lesson idea I thought might illustrate this for me/us. (since it a conversation from real life...I know I could use it)

Gracias

rok769, "We are going to eat dinner at La Carreta, do you want to come?" = Vamos a comer a la Carreta, quieres venir?

When taking about near future in Spanish we use = IR (conjugated) A An INFINITIVE VERB. Examples:

-Voy a comer.

-Va a ver una peli.

-¿Vas a cocinar?

- Vamos a limpiar el coche.

- Van a cenar.

And please, let us know which is your lesson idea so we can prepare it, ok?

Ewong,

The adjectives in Spanish usually go after the noun.  Sometimes they are placed before the noun because it gives a different kind of emphasis.

una ciudad grande= a big city

una gran ciudad= a great city

Es que aquí hay niveles distintos, brusteh. Las lecciones "Advanced" y "Upper Intermediate", y también la mayoría de los "Del Taco al Tango" sí son completamente en español. En los podcasts "Intermediate", una persona habla inglés, la otra español. Y en los de "Newbie" y "Elementary" -- es decir las lecciones para principiantes -- sólo el diálogo es en español.
