Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Allergies; they're nothing to sneeze at. If you or someone you know has a peanut allergy, this lesson should be part of your emergency kit, if you're traveling in the Spanish-speaking world. It may just save you a trip to the hospital, or at least a jab with an EpiPen!

No tengo ninguna alergia pero sí tengo una pregunta: Casi todas las palabras que terminan en -ico o -ica (como alérgico o único o América o México) tienen un acento en la vocal antes de -ico e -ica. Pero he encontrado dos grupos de excepciónes: diminutivos (abanico, angelico, ...) y palabras que terminan en -aico o -aica (algebraico, mosaico, laico, ...). Mi pregunta es: ¿Hay otras excepciónes?

pimienta; itunes is free! martinillo; your observation seems to ring true, and the reasons would have to do with adjective-forming suffixes. One exception might be ubicó and the different forms for the verb "ubicar," but if you're a word person (or a diachronic linguist) the exception proves the rule.

Amores Perros es una expresión para decir que se aman con locura, un día se quieren, otro dia de odian, es un amor muy inestable, eso quiere decir, como "Love-Hate relationship".

También es el título de una de mis películas favoritas! con Gael García mi actor favorito!

Hi,

This question may have been asked and answered in another section. I am curious about the correct way to ask for or order something. In the dialogue the person says "Quiero el pastel de chocolate" which sounds in English like "I want the chocalte cake." Of course in English we would never make an order like that since it sounds too "demanding". We would say sometthing like "Could I have the chocalte cake, please?" So is "Quiero el ... " really the polite way to order something in Spanish? Thanks and I love these podcasts!

You are right on the money.  Quiero el pastel de chocolate is correct but a little hard.  There are more polite or softer ways to say it like.  One common why is:

Quisiera el pastel de chocolate por favor – "I would like the chocolate cake please".

SpanishLarry,

The following is from The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice:

Spanish uses the imperfect subjunctive, as well as the conditional to soften a request or suggestion.

The imperfect, used only with querer, poder, and deber, is more courteous than the conditional, which is used with any verb.

I don't think that you would day "pudiera tener una cerveza"

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I tend to think of nuts as any kind of nuts. In the text "nueces" was translated as "nuts", but in the vocabulary section it was given as "walnuts".  I looked up walnut in several dictionnaries and saw that walnut is given both as "nuez" and "nuez de Castilla (Méx)". So if someone simply says "nueces" do you think they are referring to "nuts in general" or "walnuts". In French I call walnuts "noix de grenoble".

It is confusing and the differences may be regional.  Did you see the definition in WordReference ?

"nuez sustantivo femenino

  1.
    1. (del nogal) walnut
  1.
    1. (Méx) (pacana) pecan (nut)
  1.
    1. ~ moscada nutmeg
  1. (Anat) Adam's apple"

My girl friend is from Colombia and she said that to her, nuez is the word for nut in general.  I asked her how to say walnut and she answered that she never heard of walnuts until she came to the U.S.
