Hola todos,

Question of the day:  ¿Te gusta ir de compras?  Do you like going shopping?

A mí me gusta comprar cosas nuevas, pero pasar horas buscando el mejor precio no me gusta nada.  I like to buy new things, but spending hours looking for the best price doesn't appeal to me at all.

No me gusta ir de compras, me aburro mucho! Si necesito comprar algo, lo hago en línea. (tambien, ¿por qué es ir DE compras?)

Compré dos o tres cosas en Ebay,  puede ser como una droga.

I bought two or three things on Ebay, it can be addictive.

¿Es mejor decir compré algo por ebay en vez de en ebay no?

Kikuyu, creo que fuiste correcto la primera vez, cuando dijiste 'en'.

...Unless you wanted to say 'I bought something through ebay'     ...? Although that sounds less correct to me, atleast in english.

This is a very interesting question.  You buy something “en una tienda” but “por teléfono” or ”por Internet”.  My guess is that you would say “por ebay” because ebay is the vehicle that you used and you were not physical in ebay.

Newbies

One of the meanings of the word “por” is “by means of”.  For example: hablamos por teléfono” – “we talk on the phone”.  voy a  trabajo por tren” – “I go to work by train”.

Yeah that makes sense stevestrv, however I decided to do a simple Google test, with quoted 'en ebay' and 'por ebay' searches - showing 15,700,000 results and 742,000 respectivly. Though you can't really rely on the credibility of that too much.

vikia: I didn't know the expression "tener el gusto de + infinitive" but according to what I found about it, it means something like "to have the pleasure to ..." or "it's one's pleasure/honor to ...". Thus, I think for your sentence "tener ganas de + infinitive" would work better: Tengo ganas de hacer compras. I like shopping.

But the difference between "tener el gusto de ..." and "tener ganas de ..." might be a good question for pa' que sepas.

Martinillo, didn't tener ganas de mean to feel like something?

Perdón, Martinillo, es que "tengo ganas de ..." quiere decir "I feel like" y no "I like."

Se puede decir:

Me gusta/encanta/fascina/cae bien ir de compras. I like to go shopping.

Tengo ganas de ir de compras. I feel like going shopping.

Kikuyu and Stevestrv,

EN/POR,EN suggests you´re right there in the place buying it, POR suggests more the way you´ve used to buy it (as Stevesterv said). Anyway, here some examples.

- Lo he comprado EN la tienda.

- Lo he comprado POR catálogo.

- Lo he comprado EN Internet or POR Internet.

So, let me say this new technology, Internet, is the one with I would say we can use both prepositions. I´ve heard many times native speakers using one or the other, so Kikuyu use whichever.
