It should be "uve de vaca" because otherwise it is still ambiguous: "ve de vaca" or "be de baca" ("baca" means roof-rack). And I think I have to agree with her on this point. Thus, maybe you should remove the phrase "v de baca" from the supplementary vocabulary (even if it is only for the peace of mind of my friend. :)

However, "v de vaca" and "b de buey" or "b de burro" are extremely common ways to refer to /v/ and /b/ in Latin America. 

As an American, I use the term "zee" for the letter /z/, whereas most of the English speaking world calls it "zed."  Sometimes it causes a micro-second or two of confusion, but in the end it's just a minor regional difference. 

In either case, it's easier to simply learn the regional variation than to teach that one way or the other is more correct or more logical.
