Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

"Spanish is so easy," they exclaim breathlessly, "because it's spelled just the way it sounds!" That's mostly true... until you have to spell a word that came from French! For example, the word "beige." Did I spell it right?

oolung, Good for you! Yes, it's a village and volcano in Mexico. It's also a crazy-long word! I think it's spelled with a /c/ where you have a /q/. My mama actually wrote in after hearing the show; she used a /g/ where you have a /q/. Close, mama! mharbus, In "Mi color favorito es el rojo," the words "el rojo" is a predicate nominative phrase. In "Mi color favorito es rojo," the word "rojo" is a predicate adjective, which describes the word "color," rather than naming it. The preference is for "el rojo." But it's not a big deal. Other times, Spanish wants a predicate adjective where English usually wants a predicate nominative, especially in nationalities and professions. For example, in English you'd probably say, "She's an American," wheras in Spanish, you'd leave the article out: "Ella es estadounidense." Your Spanish-speaking friends will all forgive you if you use the wrong kind of predicate with a copula, so don't sweat it.

lydia1981, You're doing great! Talking about the past is actually Elementary territory. Here's how it would be: Antes, mi color favorito era el rojo, pero ahora es el azul. The word "mas" meaning "but" has cognates in Italian (ma) in French (mais) and in Portuguese (mais), but in Spanish it sounds a little archaic. Go with "pero" for 'but.' : )

Hola! Enseno una clase de ingles para mexicanos, y he escuchado mucho ellos hablando de "v chica" o "v pequeno" y "b grande". Creo que ellos estan hablando de las letras V y B pero tambien parece que no es una forma correcta de hablar de las letras V y B, verdad? Cual es la pronunciacion correcta de estas letras? "V" se pronuncia "uva", no? Y "B" se pronuncia "be", verdad? Y que significa "v chica", etc.? Gracias!

will1010 Si es una forma correcta de decir ambas letras, nosotros los mexicanos decimos "v chica" y "b grande". Pero también decimos "b" de burro y "v" de vaca. La pronunciación es exactamente la mismo, por eso hay muchas faltas de ortografía.

dongerigo is correct.  As a noun verde is masculine.  As an adjective verde can be masculine or feminine;  For example el carro verde/rojo—the green/red car.   La puerta verde/roja  The green/red door.

Acerto porque mi profesora usa canciones para ayudar los estudiantes recordar si una palabra es masculino o femenino.  No puedo cantarla parati, pero tengo las palabras.

 Most words that end in L, O, N, E, R, S,
For some reason or other are known as masculine.
In many other languages, there are two words for "the."
"Un" is "a" with masculine words.  Feminine, "una."

Asi que pienso--"la ultima letra de 'verde' es 'e', entonces 'verde' es masculino.

Es una cancion buena para los newbies.  lol.

JP: On Saturday I talked with a Spanish friend of mine about "ve de vaca". She insisted that "ve de vaca" doesn't make much sense. It should be "uve de vaca" because otherwise it is still ambiguous: "ve de vaca" or "be de baca" ("baca" means roof-rack). And I think I have to agree with her on this point. Thus, maybe you should remove the phrase "v de baca" from the supplementary vocabulary (even if it is only for the peace of mind of my friend. :)

Yes, that might be, in particular because "vaca" is a far more common word than "baca". (Though I won't try to convince my Spanish friend that this makes sense. ;)

hi martinillo, in Spain the expression "v de vaca" is not very common, and it doesn't make sense to them because they call the letter /v/ "la uve."  (Esti demonstrates this in a recent podcast).

However, "v de vaca" and "b de buey" or "b de burro" are extremely common ways to refer to /v/ and /b/ in Latin America.

As an American, I use the term "zee" for the letter /z/, whereas most of the English speaking world calls it "zed."  Sometimes it causes a micro-second or two of confusion, but in the end it's just a minor regional difference.

In either case, it's easier to simply learn the regional variation than to teach that one way or the other is more correct or more logical.

By the way, we call it "beige" in Norway too! How come so many countries seem to have borrowed this from the French?
