As i understand things, and please do correct me if im wrong (because it has been very difficult to get this stuff to stick) but, I believe one could say echo de menos mi casa y mi coche and they are both direct objects i.e. they both answer the question what/who is recieving the action of the sentence.
The indirect object is the destination-recipiant of the direct object, ie to where/whom the diect object is going
i miss my house to my family would imply that your family were recieving your house
or have i misunderstood?

Donperigo, I was thinking the same thing as you. I thought the 'a' was added because it is a person, as it is still a direct object.
Saying that, here is a question - if you say My Dad gives my sister to her fiancé (very silly example I know!) would it still be
´Mi padre le da A mi hermana A su novio?´

Also, I learnt that people tend to say Te extraño rather than te echo de menos in Latin America... Any thoughts?....

Yo pasé 8 meses en Suramerica y me encantó! La unica cuidad en donde eché de menos mi casa en grande era Buenos Aires, porque cuando estaba allí llovió como llueve en Londres! Muy extraño, porque no me gusta la lluvia y estaba tan feliz escaparla! (Obviamente extrañaba a mi familia todo el tiempo!)

NB just my opinion...
I like the para. though I believe delicioscity is generally referred to using estar because, lets be honest, the state of being food (and delicious) is fairly fleeting unless you are generalising about a cuisine etc.
my mothers jam tarts were delicious speaks of an intrinsic reliable quality of my mothers cooking wheras "those onion rings were delicious" tells us only that they gave brief pleasure. same word in english, minefield in spanish
So I may have gone for the preterit estuvieron.(depending how much thought i gave it) as the delicious state has passed and, i believe, thats all, you were intending to convey. you were not asking the listener to relive their deliciousness. or were you?

Gracias por corregirme - nunca voy a entender el uso de 'por' y 'para'! Por favor, puedes explicarme porque se usa 'por' en mi frase? Hay veces cuando se usa 'para mucho tiempo' o no?
