hola! La primera leccion intermedia es muy buena! Me gusta especialmente que Liliana habla en espanol todo el tiempo, se puede oir un poco mas de la lengua :) Si yo sacara el gordo, me dejaria de sonar con un marido rico ;) simmo971, I've looked it up. My dictionary says that "to squander" is "malgastar, despilfarrar".

This might sound cliché but perhaps... Si yo me ganara ese dinero, pues creo que me dedicaría a las obras sociales. Bueno y también compraría un terreno y construiría la casa de mis sueños.

An average one, nothing fancy: "Harrap's concise" (Spanish-English, English-Spanish). Very handy (well, not in the literal sense... it weighs quite a lot :D)

I still can't get the PDF for this lesson (http://s3.amazonaws.com/spanishpod/0017/pdf/spanishpod_C0017.pdf). It says it's zero bytes big. The other PDFs seem to work fine.

Hola todos :) Los contestas aqui es muy buen. Por mi, no se como utilisar este dinaros. Yo creo pagar una casa, ayudarle mi padres y despues, a ver. Does anyone know how to make the spanish accents for text here? (And please feel free to correct my phrasing of things) :) English or Spanish :)

Si me ganara 20,000,000 probablemente los invertiría en un negocio propio, no todo, digamos unos 15 millones.. los 5 restantes me los gastaría vaijando por el mundo.. me gustaría conocer Egipto y Roma... ah y ayudaria a mis padres tambien.

yo vivo en los estados unidos, por ese motivo no necesito mucho dinero. Hay 6,975,204 cuidadanos de honduras. Muchos no pueden ir a una escuela porque no tienen tan dinero, pero con $20.000.000, 100.000 mas estudiantes podria matricularse en un colegio por cuatro anos (cuesta $200/estudiante por cuatro anos). 100.000 mas trabjadores que vive en honduras y que estimular el economia, ayudaria apoyar el pais. Por eso, si ganaras el gordo, yo lo daria a las becas de honduras. Alguien tiene un mejor idea?

On the Expansion page I read: "Si comes más te vas a poner gordo. (If you eat too much, you’re going to get fat.)" but the audio seems to say "Si comes demás ..." I would have expected "demasiado", but on checking a dictionary I find that "por demás" and "en demasía" have the same sense of excess. Would you please confirm that más or demás are intended. Thank you.

harveyhp You are right the audio says "demás", we will correct it. In this sentence if you say "si comes más" means if you eat more, and "si comes demás" would be if you eat in excess, the intention is that if he eats too much then he will get fat.

simmo971, my pleasure. I also recommend Larousse's "Gran Diccionario usual de la lengua espanola". It's Spanish-only, so using it may sometimes be a little bit taxing, but it's worth it. You have all sorts of little notes saying if it's slang, outdated or if it's a word used only in one or another country. And also one or two synonyms and a tip on how you conjugate it.

con 20 millon dolores podria dar a una organizacion que la madre de mi amigo creo' que ayuda el pais de honduras en cosas medicos y realmente todos. voy a honduras en enero y ahora trato de ganar dinero para comprar medicina y si tengo demasiado le quiero dar dinero a un nino pobre para que pueda matricularse en la escuela. Yo compraría una casa en españa y viviría allí durante el invierno. Tambíen me gustaría viaje a unos del paises que no he visitado hasta ahora. Cuidaría por mi familia y mis amigos y aseguro de que tendrían bastante dinero por sus necesidades. El resto del dinero pondría en el banco por un día lluvioso. ¡Está bien a soñar! sacar la loteria???

I practiced this question in some of my previous spanish studies and it was presented as

"¿qué harías si tu ganaras la loteria?"

This is how I memorized it.

So does sacar and ganar carry the same meaning?

Wordreference.com dice "Me tocó la lotería" o "Me gané la lotería"...

Sin embargo aquí son las letras de una canción, Adiós Melancolía,  por el cantautor guatemalteco, Ricardo Arjona, en que se encuentra la frase "sacar la lotería":

Adiós melancolía,

gracias por la compañía

pero aquí no hay más sitio para usted.

Adiós melancolía,

le agradezco la poesía.

Que entre versos hoy me deja confesarle a esta mujer.

Que me saqué la lotería cuando la vi.

 

Parece que hay varias maneras de decir la misma cosa, ¿no?  A lo mejor, sacar la lotería es algo de América Latina, no lo sé.

¡Dios mío! Ésta es mi primero lección de Intermediate, y es muy difícil. What a jump from Elementary! My biggest problem with Spanish is understanding speech, so I almost had my first episode of epilepsy trying to understand Liliana in the dialogue. :O I'll check out the written stuff too, I'll probably understand a lot more. That said, Liliana's voice in Spanish is very pleasing to my ears. :D
