Kevin

Thanks for putting the "pregunta del día"

I use medicines over the counter, like aspirins, disprines and vitamins.

A few years ago I went to Spain to visit the Alhambra in Granada. During my visit I fell ill with Montezuma's Revenge and I spent an awful night shivering on the toilet. Finally the sun came out and, weak as a kitten, I went looking for medicine.

Near my hotel there was a "Corte Ingles" that had a drugstore department  and asked if they had something for diarrhea. In those days I spoke almost no Spanish but I did have a booklet of useful phrases.

Unfortunately I could not make myself understood so he fetched his supervisor and she brought her boss until ther was  a small crowd with everyone shouting "larrea dijera dijeran de haría a diría etc. etc. etc ".

Someone who spoke a little English asked me if I could pantomime my problem. I declined. another suggested that I might need laxative suppositories. I strongly declined and they finally understood me.

Apparently you can not buy something for diarrhea in a drug store in spain, a (green cross) pharmacy is required. Thank God the pharmacist could speak English and gave me some pills to relieve the condition.

I am glad that I have seen the Alhambra because I can never again return to Granada

Great lesson.. as always good insight about Latino culture / countries.

In India, it was more like Latin American countries, we do not go to doctor unless it is absolutely necessary (infants are the exceptions) and medicines are pretty cheap.

In the US, I see the $4 prescriptions in Walmart and CVS, and I would usually wonder for that $4 in India, I can get doctor consultantion and medicines without getting my insurance involved.
