Our friend Félix, a Cuban national and musician extraordinaire, joins Esti and Lili in Studio Fiesta to talk about Cuban culture, including slang, music, and life in the island nation. This is the first part of a two-part podcast; the second half will be published in the weeks to come.

I went to see Félix's orchestra a while ago in a club with Lili and the gang. They are AMAZING! Between songs, they asked the crowd for requests, and I yelled ¡un guaguanco! (and Lili gave me a dirty look for yelling!) by they said ¿un guaguanco? ok... and just like that, they counted it off. Like Félix says, it was EXPLOSIVE... un ritmo sabrosísimo, and something you absolutley have to hear live! Part II of this podcast, coming up in the coming weeks, is awesome... The girls ask Félix to sing a song, and he says, aw, if I only had a guitar.... so they found him one! Stay tuned for that one, it's a must-hear Del taco al tango!

Me divertí mucho escuchando este episodio: el accento de Félix, sus relatos sobre Cuba. Gracias! Estoy aprendiendo much más que español de SpanishPod: de la historía, de la cultura! Y me muero por escuchar a Félix cantar en el próximo episodio. La música cubana es mi favorita de este mundo sin duda!

Guao! Me encanto escuchar este podcast. Es la primera vez que oigo hablar del guaguanco y tengo mucho ganas de escuchar algo de este ritmo. Por qué no includes "a link" (como llamamos eso en espagnol?) para que podamos disfrutarlolo antes de escuchar a Felix cantando en el futuro podcast? Me gusta mucho cuando Del Taco al Tango es en espanol. Es para practicar este idioma que soy un alumna de Spanishpod. Muchas gracias al equipo por su trabajo destacable! Muchas gracias tambien a Felix por su rica participacion!

Wow! ¡Que buenisimo fue eso! Tengo un amigo cubano aquí en Boise y me encanta su acento y la manera de que hablan los cubanos. Para mi al menos es una manera más fácil de hablar....tragando las letras s y juntando las palabras. Félix suena exactamente igual que mi amigo, que bien! Es algo sobre español que me fascina...muchas maneras de que se puede hablarlo, y muchos acentos distintos. ¡Que chévere tener en el estudio los tres acentos distintos!

jtanzer The music in the background is Celia Cruz the "Queen of Salsa" and the song is called "Cuba". Will look for a video of her. She was great and her music a classic!

Oí ahí la palabra, "vuestro". Entonces imagino que el cubano estaba hablando con una española. Hay otros países aparte de España que usan la palabra vuestro?

Hola khutchins85 Sólo en España se usa "vuestro" porque en Centroamérica se utiliza el "vos".

Me interesaría mucho visitar Cuba!

 

Una idea:  organizar un viaje para los maestros y estudiantes de eSpanishpod.  Podríamos encontrarnos allá, en la Havana, tomar clases de español y de baile Cubano . . . como la salsa cubana, rueda, rumba/guaguanco, etc.

Los americanos no pueden viajar a cuba en un vuelo directo, ¿no?  Es interesante porque en canadá, cuba es uno de los lugares más favoritos para irse de vacaciones.  Cuándo estaba allí, la mayoría de la gente fue de canadá, con mucha de europa también.

A mí me encantaba la costa rica, ¡es bellísima!

Los americanos pueden visitar Cuba con permiso del gobierno, el cual requiere conexion con un grupo educativo o, a veces, religioso.  No es fácil obtener, pero sí – es posible.

No estoy segura de eso.  Creo que depende del negocio.  Por ejemplo, hay agricultores que van para representar su industria y negociar acuerdos, pero me imagino que van con permiso del gobierno y quedan limitados.

 

También depende del gobierno que está en la casa blanca . . . pero eso es otra cosa  ;-)
