gateando is the moment when you remove all breakable things to the shelfes, anything in range of movement gets broken, though it is funny when they start and keep rocking in their place back and forth (mostly going backward on reverse man that was funny).

when you say "gateando is the moment when... " you are not referring to an ongoing action, you are referring to a stage in development, so you need a noun and not the present participle.
el bebé esta gateando (the baby is crawling) = an action
el bebe le gusta gatear (the baby likes to crawl) = the infinitive acting as a noun.
"to crawl" and "crawling" are pretty interchangeable in english but not in spanish.

Like parar, pararse can also mean “to stop“ or to stop oneself, but it can also mean “to stand up“
