I thing that the word “listo” is a good word to see the difference between ser and estar.

With estar, listo means ready

Juan está listo – John is ready  (This is his current state)

With ser listo means smart

Juan es listo- John is smart (being smart is an intrinsic quality of John, it is part of who he is)

Hola Newbies!

The question of the day is: As a child, what was your favorite game?

A mi me gustaba saltar la cuerda.

I liked to jump rope.

Thank you for this lesson, it is much better than my "Sesame Street" suggestion, the numbers are clear and easy to understand and the idea of connecting the counting and numbers to memories of childhood games is brilliant.
Kudos to the spanishpod team.

As a child I used to go hunting with my dog in the hedgerows.

Pero, en terminos simples . . .

But, in simple terms . . .
I loved to make sand castles and roads for my toy trucks.

Well I liked hide and seek but it really not nice when all your friends can climb trees, go over to the roof of a building (jumping from one wall to the AC all the way up) while the best u can do is hide under a tree (lemon tree full of thorns) and when they see you you get... well... still have some of the scars of losing till now (man when u r fat u can do less ain't?). Liked the onion game, even I liked the cops and rubbers by freeing them that was the best classic game, dividing the house in two halves and putting stuff (that is an original idea i guess) and the thievs try to get it, cops catch them in the jail and protect the valuables. so many strategies, rush one side, sacrifices as the police can catch one only and others get the stuff, well the thief is king in this game (well this game showed my evil part or whole?).

I read that commas and periods are reversed in writing numbers in Spanish, it can be quite confusing

1,000 = 1.000

25.32 = 25,32

394.82 = 394,81

Hola,

gallinita ciega = blind man's buff (brit.) or bluff (am.)

vs,

--- though bluff also means precipice or cliff in English. Growing up in a valley surrounded by 150meter bluffs, made me think that a bluff would be a perilous thing for a blind man to have.

me gustaba escondidillas.

I loved hide and seek. I was a forces brat and our favourite game was to break in to the base and run and hide from the military police. if they caught you they would punish your father so he would be really really angry.

hasta diez

I had trouble with this -- almost sounded like one word.  I totally missed the D sound.  I had to listen to it several times before I understood it.

This is great that you speak the dialog at normal speed.  Really great listening practice.

Otras maneras para contar años.

Other ways to count years.

I read this headline and quickly found two numbered forms for years six and seven. Are there others.

Una pregunta para los maestros. He leado este titulo "El país sufre el día más violento del sexenio" y el sexenio se pueda definir como "a period of of six years, the past six years" y tambien el septenio = 7 años.

Cuales son las otras formas numerales.

In English, I seldom see uses like that other than biennium, decade, century, and millennium.
