Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Rough time getting out of bed this morning? Nodding off a little after lunch? It must be coffee time! Today's dialog is based on actual conversations that have taken place in Studio Fiesta; Esti gets up to get coffee, offers to get a cup for Leo. Not exactly heart stopping drama, but this lesson will have you talking about coffee in no time... and in Spanish!

First of all, I'd like to ask rodneyp if you really meant to say "everybody in the world," as you did, or just "everybody." Because the Spanish way to say "everybody" is todo el mundo. "The whole world." No "en" required. But if you meant everybody in the world, from Seattle to Rome, from Paris to Capetown, loves coffee, then I guess you said what you meant. Just checking in case. Now on to my equally humble "issues," as they're calling everything these days here in the high tech-infatuated U.S. Problems, disputes, interests, topics,. And much else. An earlier response written entirely in Spanish and not translated was very nice to read, but I didn't understand a few things, so I'm asking here. What does the sentence mean that starts with "A year ago?" I couldn't be sure whether the person was saying "I bought a capuccino maker as a gift to myself, or I bought it for someone else, or someone else bought it for me. I have a feeling I could use instruction about the grammar involveing the reflexive "se." thanks a lot, whoever can help. And then there are two vocab words in there that I've never seen before. Suelo and lujo. I can't just glance up to see them again in context to describe how they were used, but I did read the post a couple of times and didn't intuit anything. Again, thanks. Y por cierto me gusta el café. Lo tomo cada mañana al despertarme. Dos tasas. Negro, sin leche ni azucár. Ground recently from whole beans. Dark French Roast. I developed my taste in good coffee in the bohemian coffee houses of New york and San Frandcisco with their great stainless steel Italian espresso machines with the eagle perched on top with outstretched wings. Long before Starbucks was born. Eagles on top of these machines, the Mexicans are asking? Where is the serpent? :-)

Gracias yardbird, I actually meant 'everybody'. Suelo is the first person form of 'soler', meaning "I usually...". Of course it's also identical to 'suelo' which means ground or floor.

Hi, thanks for the definition of soler. I'll have to see that used a few more times to become familiar with it. Now what does "lujo" mean? It's from a verb whose infinitive is lujar? Yes, I'm being lazy not to go to an online Spanish/English dictionary to look it up. But this is so much more sociable! So much more to do with a sense of community! I just read Leo's blog entries, and I think he'll see my humorous intention. An American would be solitary and macho about this, but a person from a more communitarian culture might be more likely to just "share" his question and learn from conversation with others, rather than in solitude. N'est-ce pas? ¿Crees que tengo razón, Leo? acabo de escuchar la lección,y me gustó mucho. although I will have to look at the dialogue .pdf in order to see the spelling of that word related to "appetize," because I couldn't hear it clearly in the dialogue and then I can't remember how Lili and JP explained and spelled it. Pobre mí. Que lata. No, seriously, what was that word for "a hassle, an annoyance, from an earlier lesson about forgetting the wallet before going to the market? Que lio. That's it. Speaking of lios, I just clicked on the link for the dialogue .mp3 just to hear it once more, and that didn't work out well. Until now, I have been able to download and stream these .mp3s of just the dialogue, just as I do the lesson .mp3s. But this one loaded a page that sounded like my home page when I come to the site (Your Lessons/spanish Pod) and briefly I heard my computer say something like "x btn 1, x btn 2, and then that disappeared, whatever it was, and there I was on my SpanishPod home page. I went back and found a second link just beneath the first link, labeled "fix," and clicked on that. Same thing happened. Have I lost a subscription privilege or does that link now lead to a Flash player instead of an .mp3 file? I hope not! I can only use the .mp3s and play them on my own audio player, either Windows Media Player or Winamp. Thank you very much. And I still look forward to learning about the sentence in which someone gives a capuccino maker to someone as a gift. I didn't even know there was a verb regalar, although I'm not surprised to discover it. but I still haven't figured out who gave the machine to whom.

Nunca me gusto (past tense) el café. Coke lite in spanish is "coca light or coca de dieta." Prefiero mi cafeína "fria" remember the adjective is in feminine because "cafeína" is feminine.

Hi yardbird, here is how I understand luisita's sentence "Hace un ano me he regalado una cafetera muy buena para hacer capuccino.": A year go I have given me a cafetera as present, which is very good for making capuccino. I do not consider "me" as reflexive here, it is simply an indirect object (to whom have I given - dativo). So "I bought YOU a present" should be "TE he regalado", "I bought THEM a present" "LES he regalado".

yardbird, "pobre DE mí " that´s the correct way to say it. "Es un lujo que aprecio mucho." lujo=luxury, so in this sentence she´s saying "That´s a luxury I appreciate a lot." There no such a verb like "lujar"jeje but good try, instead you can say "tener lujos" or "permitirte tener lujos"=allow yourself to have luxury.

Hi, I appreciate the explanations, but I'm not sure that the grammar's being used quite as people are translating it, or as it should be. Me he regalado means "I have gifted myself," as we say these days sometimes in American English. Which precisely translates "regarlar," acdtually, even though "to gift" isn't traditionally an actual verb in English. Sin embargo, one of these days it will probably show up in the dictionary, validated, along with "to Google" and other neologisms. Anyway, I could swear that "Me he regalado" is perfect tense. I have gifted myself. Now, wouldn't it be more normal to just say A year ago I gifted myself (gave myself as a gift) a coffeemaker? Let's see: Hace un año, me regalé una cafetera.¿No? Isn't that really what she meant to say? A year ago, I gave myself a coffeemaker as a gift? Not perfect tense, just a simple preterite? Acabo de cenar. Comé pasta cubierta de una salsa de tomates, ajo, aceite de oliva y basil y con unos camarones. Con broccoli, tambien, y la accompané con un poco de vino tinto de California. ¡Que rico! Me gusta mucho cocinar. But seriously, didn't she write that in the past perfect originally, and wouldn't it be more correct in the preterite? Thanks.

yardbird, yes, actually it´s better to use the past simple tense, "Hace un año me regalé una cafetera". Acabo de cenar. HE COMIDO pasta cubierta de una salsa de tomate, ajo, aceite de oliva y ALBAHACA, con unos camarones. También con brócoli, y TODO lo HE ACOMPAÑADO con un poco de vino tinto de California. ¡Qué rico!Me gusta mucho cocinar.Después de esa cena, me APETECÍA mucho un capuCHino y una copa de flan, mmmmmmm! De verdad, yarbird un día invítame a cenar, porque después de leer lo que te preparaste para cenar... ummm me ha dado hambre.

I'm very confused about when to use quien. Usually, when I use that word, I'm told that I should use que instead. The book A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish by Butt and Benjamin says that "Quien/quienes are not used in restrictive clauses unless they follow a preposition...." Since "quién bebía mucho café negro" is a restrictive clause, shouldn't the pronoun be "que" rather than "quién"? I'd really appreciate some help with this.

I'm sure if it you read through all the conversations, you would find many grammatical and usage errors. I know I've written a few things that probalby aren't correct.

My understanding is that "te gusta" translates as "(something) pleases you" which is why you use "te" instead of "tú" - it is direct object instead of the subject of the sentence.  Is it the same with apetecer?
