Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Let's all raise a glass! In today's lesson we'll learn a very important skill in Spanish, whether you're in the Spanish-speaking world for business or for pleasure: how to toast! We'll learn the most common way to toast in the dialog; later in the lesson, Lili teaches us a toast that has a little bit of choreography involved. Here's to you!

¡Hola todos! Here‘s the question of the day: ¿A qué brindamos? What shall we toast to? A Lili y a Esti, que ya regresaron de las vacacciones. ¡Salud! To Lili and Esti, who have returned from vacation. Cheers! : )

Felicidades could be translated as "happylations!" :) Brindamos por las chicas, por supuesto, y tambien por el todo equipo del spanishpod, que siguen adelante con su brillante trabajo. Let's drink for the girls, of course, and also for the whole team of spanishpod. May they keep up the great job!

Un brinids aprendí en Mexico... ¡Arriba, abajo, al centro, a dentro! Here's how it's done... When you say 'arriba', touch the top of your drinks together; when you say 'abajo', touch the bottom of your drinks together; when you say 'al centro', touch the center of your drinks together. And for 'a dentro', drink up! Forgive any mispellings, I've never actually seen this written.

Lili...What were you saying for inside?? It seemed to be more than 'dentro' and it didn't seem to be 'a dentro'. I heard a 'p' in front of 'dentro'.

mharbus Exactly good ear! We say "pa' dentro" meaning "para adentro" but we cut it to "pa' dentro." Anybody else know a way to say salud?

Hi! I have a question about the dialogue. She tells her husband they're drinking to her "nuevo trabajo." I thought that in spanish, adjectives came after the nouns, so the correct grammer would be "por mi trabajo nuevo"? Can you mix up the order or is there a rule to follow? Thanks!! I'm really enjoying all the newbie podcasts!

alliodom, In general, adjectives come after nouns, but some adjectives can go both ways. For example a "carro nuevo" is a car that just rolled out of the factory doors. It's freshly made. However, a "nuevo carro" can be a used car, but what matters is that it's new to the owner. Also: un hombre grande (a big man) un gran hombre (a great man) mi profesor viejo (my old teacher; he's old) mi viejo profesor (my former teacher) There are a few others; the pattern is that the adjective-last constructions tend to be more literal interpretations of the adjective, while the adjective-first constructions tend to be more poetic. For some reason, it's always "la blanca nieve" (the white snow), and yes, it always sounds poetic. You really don't ever need to say "la nieve blanca" unless you're trying to distinguish it from the other colors of snow...

In Hawaii we often say "okole maluna!"  Hawaiian for "bottoms up!"  But because there is much cultural diversity there, there are a lot more.  Another very popular one is "Banzai!...Banzai!...Banzai!..." (Japanese), said each time from the gut while raising the hand with the drink in it, then finally taking the drink after the last "Banzai!".

More on the Japanese "salud," from http://jcch.com/japanese-traditions.asp

What’s the significance of the Banzai toast?

The word banzai literally means “10,000 years” and is associated with long life. Banzai cheers are given at joyous occasions, banquets and gatherings, to express congratulations, encouragement, or celebration. Traditionally, the participants shout the word “banzai” three times in unison, raising their hands in the air each time.

It is customary to deliver two separate banzai cheers at weddings. The first, “Shinro shimpu, banzai!” means “long life and happiness to the bride and groom.” The second banzai is: “Raihin shoku, banzai!" or, more politely, “Raihin no minasama, banzai!” This banzai cheer means “Long life and happiness to all the guests!” In Hawaii, these wedding banzai cheers are often given as a special toast, with participants raising their glasses with each shout of “banzai!”

Brindo al finde. En mi pais se dice "santé", o "à la tienne" si estamos dos, lo que significa "a la tuya (de salud), o "chin-chin" (eso no es frances). Soy belga. En España con amigos en Tenerife dicemos "salud", casi siempre.
