Intermediate - Free At Last
Today's lesson commemorates the birthday of Dr. King, leader of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s, which desegregated the American South using tactics of Non Violent Direct Action. Dr. King's famous speech "I Have a Dream" was given to a crowd of thousands of marchers and activists at the famous March on Washington, D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th, 1963.
Intermediate - Give me a ride
"Can you give me a ride?" I asked this question a lot more when I was in high school than I do nowadays, but every once in a while I do find myself in a situation where I have to ask for a ride. In our dialog today, Mauricio is in just such a situation, and it's not so easy; apparently he lives out-of-the-way, and on top of that, his previous behavior suggests that you might not want him in your car... Later in the lesson, we'll learn a couple of different ways to say "Can you give me a ride?" in Spanish.
Intermediate - Everybody's a critic!
I love a good movie, but I like criticizing a mediocre movie just as much. In today's lesson, we'll hear our friends criticizing the plot, the characters, even the actors, after seeing the latest flick. So buy the biggest tub of popcorn they have (maybe hit the cash machine first...) and sit back and enjoy, because SpanishPod is going to the movies!
Intermediate - Soccer Game
Nobody likes to be injured, and when a star player is unable to play, everyone is disappointed... except for maybe the opposing team. In this lesson, we'll hear how our friend is dealing with an ankle injury, how he's doing, and how long he's on the bench.
Intermediate - Memories of Christmas
¡Feliz Navidad! Today's lesson is about Christmas gifts, and who brings them. Many Latinos now celebrate Christmas with Santa Claus, but the traditional gift givers in the Spanish-speaking world are usually the Three Wise Men, who arrive on January 6th, for the Día de los reyes (Feast of the Epiphany). Since the Wise Men arrive on with their animals, you may see your young Latino friends leaving out water for the camels; all that gift-giving can make any you thirsty!
Intermediate - Lost Baggage
Let's face it; when you check your baggage on a flight, there's always a chance that they'll get lost. This is what happened to the traveler in today's dialogue, and he does not seem pleased at all. We hope this situation never happens to you, but if it does, you might need the 'lost baggage' vocabulary you'll hear in today's lesson!
Intermediate - Going on Vacation
Ah, the beaches of Puerto Rico... the sand, the sea... We need a vacation! If you're not a US citizen, you'll need a passport to go to Puerto Rico, and that means paper work... In this lesson, we'll hear how to talk about preparing to leave on vacation. Somehow, the topic in the lesson changes to the Seven Deadly Sins; which vocab might come in useful when you tell your friends what a great time you had on vacation!
Intermediate - Hit the Jackpot
Someday, I'll hit the jackpot, buy myself a tropical island, and send my resignation by message-in-a-bottle. In this lesson, we talk about what we would do, someday, if we won the lottery. Well? we can dream, can't we?
