I only just discovered and subscribed to your podcast a few weeks ago, and I think I'm just as disappointed as your long-time listeners that you will not be continuing in the current format (even though it will take me quite a while to work through all of your existing content). I just wanted to say that you are a unique and fabulous team, and if you decide to launch another project I would gladly follow you. Thanks very much for all of your work.
Uau... no puede ser!
As a religious user of SpanishPod and occasional poster, this is a sad day. I really enjoyed the podcasts, as they add a wholistic dimension to the learning process - both linguistically and culturally. This aspect made each lesson a treat - much more than a classroom setting could bring. I enjoyed listening all the time, whether it was on the train, walking around town, or just relaxing at home.
It was really the staff of Leo, Jenny, Marco, and Lili which made this the best podcast around - refreshing, insightful, and enjoyable. I hope there is some reconsideration as SpanishPod is such a great production from top to bottom.
When I received the email last week I was really sad. It was like a very good friend told me he/she was moving far away. I've become very attached to Spanishpod over the past few years. The team has accompanied me everywhere. It's been an amazing constant and has improved my Spanish indescribably. I'm very upset about this decision because even though I've been listening for years, I learn something new in almost every dialogue. I've also become an obsessive Joaquin Sabina fan, thanks to "Oye Como Va". You're a unique and dynamic team and I really appreciate everything you've done here. I also will miss the community, which will become less active as a consequence. Thanks for all of your hard work and enthusiasm. I will miss you all greatly.
Hola todos! Thank you so so much for doing these podcasts. Because of them, I LOVE learning the Spanish language.
I really like the idea of organizing the lessons in various courses. There are so many podcasts already that I don't think I'm going to miss the new ones that used to be published weekly. Sometimes, I am honestly overwhelmed by all the stuff you have. :)
Also, I really like La Clave [thanks JP - it makes grammar so fun!], Cooking with Tobasco, and Del Taco al Tango. Please don't ever take them off the website!
Again, thanks so much!
I do have a question. After April, will the comments section still be active and will you guys be there to answer questions we might have?
I motion the users band together and rehire the talents to keep Spanish Pod together. Even bring back the pioneers JP & Este. I wish I could write a big check and keep everyone working. But seriously what will you all be doing in the future?
I do feel a connection with you guys and it's going to be a sad day when no new content is released... :(
Also yes I think the content released on a book would be awesome, with an exclusive signing by the whole team in NYC
I tracked down JP on facebook and begged him to start another online course. He was pleased with the request but sad to hear about spanishpod's decline. He said he was interested ... maybe one of these days. espero que sí, as others have pointed out, La Clave was wonderful -- and this is from someone who is not a big grammar fan.
JP signed on with another team after leaving here. He had been there only a few months when their parent organization shut down the Spanish program "to concentrate on Japanese? maybe" Partly due to JP they had some interesting grammar and etymological content. That too, now in cans. Luncheon meat, long dead. The live feedback and topical subjects that make/made this place such an adventure MIA.
I don't participate on the community, the reason why I subscribe is for the new lessons. Just like magazine subscriptions, new lessons are the heart of subscriptions :(
It's extremely obvious the stopping of new lessons is so Praxis stops bleeding money. What really irritates me is how Praxis is telling their employees to spin this. What is even worse is that Praxis is using this spin talk as an excuse not to refund people.
The comparison to a magazine subscription was used in the podcast. It is the perfect analogy, however would a magazine keep your money if they stopped producing new magazines, and just tell you to read the old articles again?
I call on Praxis to refund each and every person, regardless of whether you request it. An honest company would have sent an e-mail saying outright they will refund everyone unless they choose to stay.
I agree, but we also all know Praxis could care less.
They know they're going to encabronar (piss off) a lot people, but what can we do? Sure, we won't renew our subscriptions, but they're confident they can pull in a new customer base and stay alive.
And yes, it's sad they forced the team to give us the news, as far I'm concerned that was a slap in the face to both the team and us, the customers.
Businesses will always act in their own best interests. The only thing I can, and will do, is not refer people to SpanishPod anymore. It's a shame, it's such a great resource.
At the end of the day, I hope they treat the team fairly and with respect, something else big business doesn't seem to know how to do.
rodneyp's take on this is very much in line with my suspicions. It has also occurred to me that we really don't know what Praxis is up to, what they will offer in the future, and with that in mind I have been downloading lots of lecciones.
And I agree also that the spanishpod team is great and I'm sorry you guys are going through this. Thanks for all your help and the good fun over the years. ¡abrazos y qué les vaya bien!
¡Hola!
Especialmente gracias a Yenny, Marco y Liliana. ¡Viva el español! y ¡viva SpanishPod!
Gosh! I was seriously thinking of coming back after a year off from this site. I had just come back yesterday only to find this post. Aaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!
I have been trying out the newer content and now I have to make a decision... :-(
I would like to buy a cd of the lessons rather than purchase subscription and download each one. I will be looking out for this cd to buy; it would save me time.
¡Hola queridos usuarios!
I was a SP users and after receiving an email from Praxis asking me to renew my membership, I came to check out the site. As much as I enjoyed SP and really liked the SP team, I let my membership expire because as I was feed up with Praxis, in particular the way they would reduce the serves and tell us that they were doing it for our benefit. This time Praxis went too farther. They might be able to rip off the current users but I think that they will find a large drop in renewals and I would like to encourage anyone who drops SP because of this change to let Praxis know. Original Praxis put together a great product with an incredibly talented team and they are destroying it.
I just wanted to be sure that it’s clear that my frustration is with Praxis and not with the four members of the SP team or the technicians who support them. I think that they are magnificent and truly miss their shows.
I totally agree with you, stevestr! This decision is really a terrible waste of a great service.
Wow! I just got on the site for the one week trial and am already enamoured by the site! Then I discover this!!! What a big shame. I am sure that the team will be snapped up or do something great in the very near future....just a shame that the format it being lost for now.
I have made my decision to not continue based on the reduced services which was a decision made by the management at Praxis, not because of the fine production team that creates and delivers the content.
They are awesome and I hope another site will pick up where this site left off to hire these great teachers and get back to the best language learning site available. Good luck everybody.
Question for everybody:
I currently have a basic subscription, which means that I have each podcast and its dialog as a .pdf archived in my iTunes. If I upgrade to Premium (even for one month) won't I then be able to archive all podcasts, .pdf files, and expansion audio as well, once the new content stops?
Thanks,
Antonio
Lili, you are my girlfriend from afar. I have adored you from the very first. While I have nothing witty to say. I am so sad. It is a breakup that I don't want. I know that I am not the first listener to say that te amo. I will miss you. But I expect great things from all of the team. You are cheerful and easy on the ears. I will miss you profoundly. Te amo, te amo, te amo.
Antonio,
I think that is the way it still works.
I signed on as a praxis user, lapsed for several months then reupped.
I got a revamped account. Same online persona but with apparently a new access number that wanted to download a new copy of everything to iTunes.
The double copies confused my iTunes filters and I had to manually refile a lot of stuff so as not to "overfill" my phone.
That probably should not happen if you have been here continuously.
------------
This has been a great place.
Great people, teachers and students alike.
I hope meet some of you one day.
Hi all,
I managed to get partial refund for my subscription. I will have 19 months remaining in my subscription by early April when there are no more new lessons. So I requested 19 months worth of refund, and Praxis agreed. If you have many months of subscription remaining after April, you should ask them for partial refunnd.
I was subscribing to Frenchpod as well before, and I wasted my money when they stopped Frenchpod. I am glad I at least managed to get refund this time.
Just like other users, I will miss getting new episodes.
Hi nkambaya
Can I ask if you got the full value of what remained on your subscription? In other words, if you purchased a 24 month subscription was your refund equal to (What you paid) *(19/24). If so, I owe Praxis an apology for using the expression “ripe off”.
If your refund was equal to (what you paid) - (the monthly rate*5 months) I will let my comment stand.
Hi stevestr,
I paid $82.17 for 24 months, and I got $65.05 back.
$82.17/24 *19= $65.05
So I got full value back. I specifically asked for the amount.
Praxis,
I apologize for using the term "rip off". If you are giving full refunds to your users, and not changing them the monthly rate for the time they have used, I can believe that you are wasting an incredible resource i.e. the SP team but you are not stealing.
Thank you nkambaya
I have started a yahoo group Spanishpod fanclub. go to yahoo.com and search on spanishpod. If you wish to post something and you want your community of friends to know you thoughts. Please meet me there. Spanishchuck!
I'm so sad to hear that SpanishPod is being discontinued. Best of luck to the team in the future, and I hope you close up Studio Fiesta with a proper fiesta!
A personal THANKS to JP (and of course to Liliana) for all the funny podcasts over the years. We've been cracking up about you for some time now... I'm a new re-subscriber, but have enjoyed and learned a LOT from the lessons since the days when they were free! Gracias y te deseamos muchisimas suerte. Y claro a Lili y Marco, Esti y Leo tambien.
Muchas gracias por tu mensaje!
Agradezco el haber sido nuestra usuaria. Esperemos que sigas estudiando español! Saludos!
I am sad too - I was a Praxis member a few years back when I was learning Chinese and a little Spanish for a holiday and trying to keep my French fluent, but had to let it drop when my job changed and I had no time. I am concentrating on Spanish now and came back on the weeks free trial because I had changed my email address, only to find this! I am so glad they are refunding those who have paid upfront - if my email address hadn't changed I could easily have decided to sign up for 6 months before I came across the news about the change. I'm glad to see it is now on the welcome page. I'm a bit more happy to rejoin on a monthly basis now; before the impression was that maybe it was going down the tubes altogether and perhaps I might find it hard to stop them taking the money if it folded.
My hope would be that alongside the new 'courses' they will continue a similar membership with reissues of old emails, which would work fine for those who come to it new, though obviously not for those who have been here all along. I think they need to reduce the price differential between Basic and Premium, though, or else have a Basic+ which includes some of the features of the iphone app - just the text, perhaps. If no new content is being added, an extra $20 a month is impossible to justify for me, as really I don't use the online tools that much for Spanish. I really like the app though, and would pay a bit extra to get that, just the equivalent of the PDF files.
I think in their pricing they need to grasp that learning Spanish is a very different ballgame to learning Mandarin. For Chinese, there is less out there and with the whole complication of learning the characters, it makes the online tools a lot more valuable. For European languages, there are lots of other excellent resources and the audio is really the biggest thing for most people. So while the extra levels and the PDFs are enough to justify Basic membership for me, I'd find it a real problem now to convince myself to pay for Premium.
That's a shame, because I think the Iphone app is the killer ingredient these days. They should get as many as possible hooked on using that, at a lowish price, and then either charge for extra blocks of content or for extra features or whatever. I don't want to sit in front of my computer screen doing exercises, but I might be persuaded to sit on my train journey doing them on my iphone - but other apps are so cheap there's no way anyone is going to pay $29 / month to use an app when all the content will disappear as soon as you stop paying! At the very least, a months payment should result in a certain number of downloaded lessons remaining usuable on the app.
I'm going into some detail because potentially I'm still a customer here and I would like them to think about how they price this. The stratospheric kind of prices they are charging for Chinesepod courses just won't float for European languages, I don't believe. If there is a better way to bring these thoughts to the attention of management than posting here, let me know.
Thanks - Karen
I just started my six-month subscription a few weeks ago to show my support and appreciation for the Spanispod team - knowing full well that there will be no new material. I hope my optimism will be rewarded with a new, academically challenging format. Will my access to Spanish pod be affected in any way? Will I still have access to the same material, such as the discussion history, expansion exercises, and tools?
Hi
Thanks so much for this. You will still have the same access to SpanishPod. Everything will remain normal except new material. Let me know if you have more questions.
Thanks again.
How can we downpload the podcasts since there will be no new ones?
Being new to the site, it's all new material to me. Nonetheless, the podcasts made the learning personal and fun. But the lessons themselves are excellent and the site can use some organization. It was initially very over-whelming to me because I'm a "returning" student of Spanish, not a beginner. It was difficult to figure out where I wanted to go. Needing organization, I simply started with #1, which sort-of worked. Anyway, I can't remember when my term expires but I'll at least give it a go come April. Thanks to all that made it a great site and I'll sure will continue to do so...!
What a shame I didn't find this site earlier. It's wonderful for these who just want to keep their Spanish fresh. The episodes are so entertaining and easy listen to again if I don't get it all the first time. Not much incentive to go beyond my free trial period.
Hi!
We will not produce new material but we have over 1,000 podcast in the archive that you could use! Saludos!
Unfortunately, my trial subscription only lasted for an hour, and then I was told it expired. If I get a paid subscription, can I download the podcasts to my ipod?
Hey all,
My subscription ran out at the first of the year and I didn't renew, but I've been a user since 2008. I just wanted to thank all the Spanishpod team, current and past.
You all made such a mark on my life, a gift of another language, of knowledge.... and of friendship.
Thank you
I am sad and disappointing in your decision to hault adding content to spanishpod...de verdad, que mala idea.
I am a cultural anthropologist and I study language and culture. You all are on the front lines of communicating and describing not only language, but culture, across borders and countries in a global world. I know you know, that language is not static,it cannot be "cut and pasted" and re-organized from previous episodes with the expectation that it will still be relevant. Language is culture. It's not retroactive but is situated in time.
Liliana is right. Re-publishing some lessons from the past is an efficient and cost effetive way utilize your material. But the power of Spanishpod is the fact that you discuss current events that are happening right now, so that we, who are listening can talk about those things right now. That is how adults learn. I thought you'd get that. Spanishpod was the only service that really tapped into that.
My idea is that Liliana should take her crew and start her own pod. (Eres una chingona Liliana....gracias por todo ;)
Bye Spanishpod...you lost your relevancy.
So, it seems like forever since we stopped getting new podcasts and I have been waiting to see what kind of reorganizing or repackaging was going to take place. So far, I haven't seen anything to make me want to renew my subscription when it expires in six days.
I do want to thank Liliana, it's good to know the team is still there to answer my questions. But I don't think I'm going to want to pay the same subscription price for a service that is no where near what it used to be.
I will miss you Spanishpod! The team and the community!
¡Hola a todos!
It's been a while since I posted here! I'm as disappointed as anyone else that sPod is no longer publishing; I consider this as some of my best work!
Please don't be shy about staying in touch... I'm always glad to hear from former listeners! You can find links to my facebook, twitter, and personal email in my profile page (just click my name). jpv
I don't know any of your other work, but I don't know how it could be better than this! I've only come to SpanishPod recently, but I am listening to all of your lessons and learning a lot. Glad you're still checking in, so I can at least say thank you for everything you contributed. Thanks, JP! You've really made a difference for me. :)
Thank you JP for making spanishpod lively and relevant I also miss Esti, my fave part is the pa que sepas where everybody is in real wacky discussion lol.
I wondered why I wasn't getting any updated podcasts :(
Just when I felt ready to move up from Newbie to Beginner.
I didn't realize when they said the subscription is monthly they meant monthly (not 30 days) so I just purchased a basic subscription and it is going to run out in one day ... sigh.
Hi
I dont understant your comment. Is there a way I can help out?
U meant you payed for a month and you did not get it?
Please explain.
It seems to have been resolved.
I had paid on May 31 and it said my subscription would have to be renewed June 2, but now it says my subscription would have to be renewed July 3.
Wow! I haven't logged in for a long time... Even though I only posted a few times, the interaction part of the site was a large part of it's attraction. It's seems like some PRAXIS executive looked at people like me who were willing to pay for the service, but rarely posted or interacted with staff and thought hehehe.... we can save a lot of money by just selling the content we already have. They think us lurkers don't care about the ongoing current content and interaction part of the site. Wrong. I agree that it was hard for newbies to get in on the conversation, but they needed to improve that feature not get rid of it. I want more and better interactive features not less and I'm willing to pay for them.
Thank you Jenni, Marco and Liliana. Best of luck in the future.
For me it's not too big of a deal since I'm a newbie member. There is tons of content for me to get through. My only concern is that, with this change, will there be others to follow? Will some of the content evenutally go away? I'm averaging 10 lessons a week while I commute to and from work, but I'm still only in the newbie section.

I just learned about this by doing a search on my mobile device as I am moving out of USA and I need to learn Spanish. I was going to enroll in class there, and when I am in that country I will learn Spanish faster since I will be in full emersion. However, I wanted to know how many lessons are there? If I can get enough pod casts even though you are not making anymore :( - It may be worth it to join? I have 7 days to decide... Thanks for the trial.. so far so good.
Hi
We have over 900 podcast. There are different levels Newbie,Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advance. My advice is to get a subscription. You can get access to all the material and keep involved in the online community. I am here to help out.
Oh no! I just signed up for the free trial yesterday and was looking forward to an actual subscription. I have taken a Spanish course in University as well as tried several off-the-shelf products. I just discovered SpanishPod on my iPhone and it is BY FAR my favorite. We all learn differently and for me, SpanishPod is putting together concepts that I've had a hard time understanding with all the other methods I've tried.... so sad!
knarfc - it is still an active community and there are SO many resources here on the site. I hope you continue to dig through the material and enjoy. I agree that they have done such a great job of explaining the little details/concepts that are missed in other media forms.
From what I have seen so far, I agree with you mohavee. I've been on the site every day! Can I ask another question.... how does the other site JP is involved with relate to Spanishpod? Is it the continuation of this site? I am looking at both and trying to decide.
knarfc - Can you tell me what other site JP is involved with? I would love to check it out. Thanks!
I purposely didn't mention the site because it was not my intent to take or remove business from Spanishpod.com. I simply wondered if the other site was a continuation or endorsed by this site. If JP is still watching perhaps he can comment.
Fair enough. I wouldn't want to take business away from this site either.
So, how to you get to JP's site.
Thanks.
I might be mistaken, but I think JP is no longer associated with the other site, either. I tried the other site a couple of years ago and found it very disappointing, so I won't say more, except that JP has a blog at http://jpv206.wordpress.com/
Hi Cyberdiva
Long time no seen!
Thanks for sharing JP's website. JP is back to Seattle working as a teacher.
Glad to have u back!
¡Hola a todos! My ears were tingling...
As Lili said, I'm back in Seattle teaching high school. I, like cyberdiva, will decline to recommend the other site as well ;)
Cyberdiva, thanks for linking to my blog! I always have some projects brewing, and I do have some language-learning-related posts up there, but mostly my blog is about what I'm thinking, eating, and what I'm thinking about eating.
Please don't be shy to connect with me through my blog, email, facebook, twitter, etc.
I'm extremely sad to hear that this is happening!
The Spanishpod and Chinesepod teams have played a huge role in the maintenance of my language skills back here in Australia.
I haven't had time to read all of the comments, and suspect that my question might already have been answered - But I am only just half-way through my subscription, and the current answers seem to suggest that there won't be a refund?
Doesn't this consitute repudiation of the contract of service by Praxis?
And to Liliana, Marco y todos, espero que sigan enseñando, les extrañaremos!!!
Hi!
I am still here helping out answer all the questions you might have.
If you want to be refunded let me know and I can ask. I am not at Praxis anymore, but I asked to keep on helping out the community :)
Take care
Liliana
I just discovered your podcast today while driving for work and I am so sad to find that you are not producing anymore! I listened to many hours today and was surprised at how much I understand but definately have much work to do. My encanta mucho la idioma de espanol! I would write more in spanish but have to learn how to write characters on my new mac. I listen to and practice spanish at every opportunity. You and the team have done such a fantastic job here. You have a beautiful voice and I really feel like I know you all only after a few podcasts! If you end up starting any other podcasts, please inform us here. Mil Gracias and buena suerte!
Hey Lili,
I'm so sad to read you're no longer with Praxis. I've only just seen this now. Did I miss some announcement? You'll be greatly missed. Thank you for everything both here and on CPod. I wish you all the very best for the future. At least we still have your awesome podcasts to listen to. It's so good of you to still help out the community on the boards. Muchas gracias. :)
Hello! I only recently found SpanishPod, only to see all these posts about new service no longer available. I am sure this question has been answered...but should does it still make sense to subscribe to basic/premium access? Is the community (discussion boards) still active? I've researched many Spanish Learning sites and this really does seem to be the best I've seen...such a shame it is no longer continuing. Also, given that no new service is going to be added...is the next step to close the site down? I just want to be sure that I don't put down a one-year subscription and then I can't use it anymore...
