Upper Intermediate - Booking a Room

Hoy vamos a escribir un poco más...

¿Te has alojado alguna vez en un hotel de lujo?  Describe tu experiencia.

En febrero de este año me quedé tres días en el Manila Hotel, un hotel de cinco estrellas y con mucha historia.  Uuy, qué lujo... Teníamos vistas panorámicas de la bahía, nos planchaban la ropa... y el desayuno bufet estaba rico.  Ya quiero volver.

Cuándo fui a Kuala Lumpur en Malasia en 2006, mi amigo me convenció a quedar en el Hitlon Hotel.  Fue magnífico.  Tuvo un jacuzzi, la cama de matrimonio súper extragrande, una televisión del plasma, y una ducha que se parece gotas de lluvia (a rain shower).

¡Todo es muy barato también!

En febrero 2007 fué a Guanajuato, México para estudiar español en la escuela donQuijote.  Me alojé en un hotel "boutique" , Quinta de las Acacias:  qué fenomenál !  Un edificio protejido por el patrimonio, de estilo francés porque era batido por los españoles con el dinero de las minas de plata, y el architecto municipal era francés!  Un cuarto con cama supergrande, todo en madera antigua, y un baño "romano" - jamás he visto un hotel tan limpio.

Después de casi veinte horas de vuelo para llegar a Bangkok nos sentíamos como zombies. Nosotros nos recompensamos con una habitación de hotel con vistas sobre el río. Hubo una maquina para hacer el café en la habitación, mini-bar, y las frutas frescas sobre la mesa. No va a llegar mejor que eso.

Hace dos meses mí esposa y yo fuimos a San Diego para ir al jardín zoológico.  Nos alojamos en un hotel muy bueno, el mejor en la lista de TripAdvisor.  Tuve una experiencia desagradable pero no tuvo nada que ver con la cualidad de la habitación.   

Bueno, inmediatamente mi di cuenta que las señoras de limpieza y las que servían la comida a la habitación fueron todas de México.  Estaba ansioso de hablar con ellas pero después de mi primero intento fue obvio que los responsables las han ordenado que no estuvieran permitidas a hablar con los invitados.  Cada vez que empezaba una conversación, agacharían la cabeza y evacuarían la recamara.  

También, me pareció raro que se dejaba la propina en un sobre para que los responsables colecten todo para “distribuírsela” a los trabadores.  Claramente hay una razón por que los trabadores no saben exactamente cuanto dinero colectan.

Cuando era muy pequena, mi familia y yo fuimos a otra isla, la "grande isla" o Hawaii (es el nombre de una de los islas, y tambien por el colectivo).  Tuvimos un "upgrade" porque el hotel estaba vacio, y el habitacion era hermosisima!  Todavia recordemos esa experiencia con mucho gusto.  

Una pregunta, en el dialogo, Esti dijo dos veces "quisiera" - "quisiera hacer una reserva..." y "si quisiera cancelar..." porque los dos frases son en imperfecto subjuntivo?  Porque no solo en presente subjuntivo?  Y tambien, la traduccion es "I would like" por la primera, y "if I wanted" por el segundo en el PDF...gracias por la ayuda!

- quisiera hacer una reserva = I would like to make a reservation.

- pero si quisiera cancelar = but if I would like to cancel.  You can translate it as "if I wanted" in English, which it means pretty much the same and in fact it sounds more natural.

The reason we use imperfecto del subjuntivo is to be as polite as possible, so you can also use the present "quiero hacer una reserva" but it sound less polite. You can not use presente subjuntivo here, it does not make any sense "quiera hacer una reserva".

fabrizio, claro que sí puedes usar el condicional, muy bien :D

"querría hacer una reserva" o "me gustaría hacer una reserva".

Esta posibilidad de poder utilizar ambos el subjuntivo y el condicional me desorienta un poquito. Estoy acostumbrado que uno sirve por una cosa y el otro por una otra... :-)

todavia estoy un poco confundida porque podemos usar el imperfecto, porque se usa este tiempo por el pasado, verdad? Pero en este caso, el deseo de hacer un reserva es en el presente... y el sentido es el mismo que el condicional...?  gracias!

Perdóname si no estás hablando de quisiera.  Si estás hablando de quisiera, es un uso especial del imperfecto de subjuntivo.  Se puede usar querer, deber y poder con el imperfecto de subjuntivo para ser mas suave o cortés.  Mira la enlace abajo.

Creo que se puede considerar un caso particular del periodo hipotético: es como si ante la frase "quisiera un bocadillo" hubiese una frase como "si fuera posible". De hecho también en el periodo hipotético se pueden utilizar ambos el subjuntivo y el condicional:

(Si fuera posible) quisiera un bocadillo.

(Si no te molestara demasiado) querría un bocadillo.

I am new in Spanishpod and for now I find it great.

The funny thing is that I am Brazillian. Spanish is very similar to portuguese but this is the main reason its so difficult to be fluent. I understand almost everything but can't speak correctly (we say here that brazillians speak "portunhol"). In my (new) job I have to talk to Mexico everyday and I use English (I got frustated when I tried to speak spanish - or portunhol - and the secretary asked if I speak english). So close, so far away..

Anyway, Jp and Liliana are great, the podcasts are very instrutive and funny. Actually I am learning 2 languages aside Spanish: English (Improving) and Portuguese (reviewing the grammar). That's a bargain !

As far as I can see, your English is great.  I can relate to your experience with the secretary at your job.  I get frustrated when I speak Spanish to the employs in Latino grocery stores and they answer me in English because communicating with me in Spanish requires too much effort on their part.
