Hi a little help please.

I am having troubles with this sentence from the expansion:

"El incendio lo provocó la llama de una vela."

(The flame of a candle caused the fire.)

I am having trouble seeing what in the sentence says that the “incendio” was cased by the “llama de una vela”  Is it the “lo”?

It seem like it should be something like

El incendio fue provocado por la llama de una vela

Or

La llama de una vela provocó el incendio.

A more literal gloss would be: 

The fire, the flame of a candle provoked it. 

When a Spanish speaker wants to put the direct object at the beginning of the sentence, there will be a direct object pronoun before the verb.

No estoy seguro que tengo un obra arquitectónica favorita. Hay muchos edificios me gustaría ver antes yo muero. sí me gusta ver una buena iglesia.

Quizás el año que viene iré a Barcelona y ver la sagrada familia. y quizás, un dia,la hagia sofia, st peters, st basils, san marcos, chartes, santiago de compostella, y la aeropuerto de Madrid ( vale, no es una iglesia pero yo tendré que volver a mi casa.)

 i think it is, as you can see im trying to work this construction into my bag of tricks at the moment. heres a link to an explanation. so if it is "it" does one need to worry about pluralising it? you dont seem to have to worry about gender e.g.

¿Qué tal la película? Se me hizo muy larga.

donperigo: Thanks, now I remember reading Lilianas explanation before. I guess it was because of the "No subject 'it' in Spanish" video that I realized that the only possibility to translate "se" here appears to be "it" (even "you" or "one" don't really fit, as they usually do with "se" constructions but the reason for this might be English, not Spanish! :).

Regarding your question: I think "se" doesn't change for plural words. Examples from the web:

Los minutos se me hacen eternos. The minutes seem to be eternal.

Largas se me hacen las horas. The hours seem to be long.

¿Por qué se me hacen conocidos? Why do they seem to be known?

Los días se me hacen cortos. The days seem to be short.

Liliana, JP & donperigo: I withdraw my question about "se me hace"! I think it's actually just a reflexive verb. From the dictionary of the RAE:

hacer: 55. prnl. Dicho de una cosa: Parecerle otra a alguien. Las manadas que a don Quijote se le hicieron ejércitos. (reflexive verb. Said about a thing: to appear to be something else to someone. The herds that to Don Quijote appeared to be armies)

Thus, no impersonal se, no passive, just a simple reflexive verb. Remember: Spanish is easy. ;)

Visité la Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar hace dos años. Es muy grande y se me hizo bastante oscura. Fue la primera vez que oí una misa en español (no entendí casi nada excepto partes del Padrenuestro :). La misa era en la Santa Capilla del Pilar que verdaderamente es un espacio amplio e íntimo a la vez. (Quiza porque no hay mucha luz.)

Pues, lo que me dio un poco de asco era la gente que besaba una piedra con la huella de la virgen. Son un poco raros los católicos, ¿no? :)

Con respecto a la arquitectura lo que más me impresiona es la arquitectura más antigua. Tan antigua que no entendemos, como el Silbury Hill en Inglaterra:

stevestrv: Sí, hay muchas iglesias antiguas en Alemania, pero supongo que aún hay más en España e Italia y también en Francia. Me gusta mucho visitar iglesias, sobre todo en el verano porque son casi siempre espacios tranquilos y menos calurosos.

Algo que me impresionó mucho cuando estuvimos en Italia hace un año fue que se puede (should this be podía?) entrar cualquier iglesia y encontrar un montuno de arte muy viejo.

Creo que "podía" es mejor porque siempre era (y todavía es) así. "montuno" debe ser "montón". I think that "podía" (imperfect) is better because it always was (and still is) this way. "montuno" should be "montón".

Las obras de arte en muchas inglesias sí son muy impresionantes;  y siempre hay otra cosa para descubrir. The works of art in many churches are very impressing; and there is always something more to discover.

Además: después de haber visto muchas obras muy opulentas,  me encantan también las obras más sencillas. Additionally, after having seen many very opulent works, I'm also enchanted by the most simple works.

Thank you form the correction on spelling of "montón".

This is something that always confuses me.  In English you can say statement below but I am not sure if you can mix the past and present tenses the same way is Spanish.

One thing that impressed (past tense) me when we were in Italy a year ago was that you can enter (present tense) any church and find (present tense) a lot of very old art.

steverstrv: I should stop trying to correct other postings! (Or do it much more carefully.) For some reason I assumed that "puede" is preterite and that the choice is therefore between preterite and imperfect, ¡qué vergüenza! If the choice is between present tense and imperfect I would actually prefer present tense! (But of course I'm not sure! :) Sorry!

es verdadero que se puede encontrar muchos pinturas grandes en las iglesias pero usualmente no son gran pinturas. A menudo son obras donde el pintor era pagado por la yarda.
todos los buenos, estan en museos y galerias de arte.

it is true that one can find many big paintings in churches but usually they are not great paintings. often they are works where the painter was paid by the yard. all the good stuff is in galleries and museums

You might not have meant to make it, but I think it is a good point.  In this case puede may be correct, but I know that there are times in English when we mix past and present tenses in a sentence and in Spanish the tenses must be consistent.  I just can’t remember when.

Me perecía bueno el arte en las iglesias pero no sé la diferencia entre gran arte y mal arte.

The art in the churches Looked good to me but I do not know the difference between great art and bad art.

Me impresiono mucho el Taj Majal cuande fui a Agra. Es un monumento increible muy precioso. 

JP,  Me encanta La Sagrada Familia tambien.  Mi marido y yo visitamos Barcelona hace dos anos, es una ciudad favorita. 

He estado en Espana tres veces pero nunca he visitado Zaragoza.  Quizas la vez proxima.

Stevestrv, muchas obras de arte estan en los museos pero hay excepciones, por ejemplo la capilla Sistine (Sistine in Spanish?)). 

Pienso que no tengo una obra arquitectónica favorita.

Me encanta mucha la Chicago Cultural Center y la Harold Washington Library en particulár. Y la tienda de Marshall Field's. Y . . .

Y San Antonio, donde vivo ahora, tiene muchas iglesias y otras obras que me gusta mucho también.

Me encanta mucha las obras de Frank Lloyd Wright y Gaudi. La parc Guell y las casas mas que la Sagrada Familia.

Estuve en Zaragoza unas veces. Puedo conformar que la Basílica es muy impresionante. Vale la pena visitarla si van a pasar por esta ciudad.
