Remember Me
Lesson Introduction

Married? Ha ha, no; but I've dodged a few bullets... In today's lesson we'll hear how to say if you're available, or off the market. Later, Liliana talks about Latin society's pressure to tie the knot and settle down.

Estoy casada. Tengo una hija 6 meses. En Rusia discriminación es muy fuerte. Cada empleador pregunta en familiar status. Es regla aqui. I think sometimes employer asks about family to know if person is adult enough to be responsible for serios business matters. Those who have wife/hasband and children think in very different way than those who do not have.

dear ewong, puedes decir: todos los buenos están cogidos u ocupados.

Recuerda que en México el verbo coger no lo podrías usar porque no significa lo mismo que en España. En España, coger=to take whereas in Mexico means to have sex, so that's a mistake we don't want to happen, don't you think?

One small correction.  The Spanish verb for “to marry” (casarse) is reflective.  So you would say yo me he casado.

Stevestr,

I guess it all depends on what Khin was wanting to say.

If she wanted to say:

I got married 16 years ago= Me casé hace 16 años.

               or

I have been married for 16 years=Me he casada desde hace 16 years.

Isn't it casada for a female and casado for a male?

You are close.  The past participle (casado) can be used as an adjective.  When it is used as an adjective,  it will match the noun for gender and number i.e. casado casada casados and casadas.  But when the past participle is used to form any of the perfect tense (present, past or future), in this case present me he casado it does not change for gender or number.  So, ella es casada proque ella se ha casado.

This is a little tricky but the verb ser is used with soltero/a.  And if you are talking about yourself, use soltera becouse you are a woman.

you would say "soy soltera"

Avatar
cobre says

soy soltera  - I am single woman

soy sotero - I am single man

estoy (estar) tends to denote a changeable state (like hunger, tired, etc that one can enter and leave again and again) , and soy (ser) a basic nature sort of thing.  New,  old,  are some basic nature sorts of things and I guess single belongs in the same catagory because it like New is something that is an initial state that can never be returned to.  Single, progresses to married and from there to widowed widower or divorced and though we may sometimes use single to describe people of the last two catagories, they never have the innocence of single as they once did.

I got confused about new in that it seemed so changable and I wanted to use estar, but It is a state of being even if it is ephemeral, fleeting, fragile, soon gone; so new uses ser and so does single.

Hi Khin

You are welcome.

When you said  "ya sabo que decir", did you mean "Now I know what to say"?  If so, I would just like to point out that saber is irregular in "yo" and it should be, "ya sé que decir"

Hola everybody ;-)

Very usefull lesson ;-D

but... I've got question.

Why we say:

"Eres soltero?" as "Are U single?"

but

when we ask "are U still single?", we say "todavia estas soltero?" instead "todavia eres soltero"??

best regards

Ida

Both can be used:

todavia ESTAS soltero or todavia ERES soltero.

When you say someone ES soltero, you are describing that person.

When you say ESTAS soltero you are saying what is his status. Both work.

When I ask "eres soltero?" I don't desribe anyone, do I? I only ask about his/her status.

Perhaps when you ask, are you single ? you are enquiring about an intrinsic quality, (someone IS single or they arent). By adding the todavia (still) you have made "change of status" the focus of the question hence estar.
