Es por eso que venden los Nintendo DS. Para los viajes largos se valen el peso en oro. O, por lo menos, puede tomar su lector MP3 y escuchar el spanishpod- mejor por el cerebro y el medio ambiente...

La pregunta del día:

¿Cuál es el viaje más largo que has hecho en coche?

What´s the longest road trip you´ve taken?

Nuestra familia condujimos desde Mississippi hasta Washington DC, sin parar. Nos tardábamos 19 horas en llegar.

Hola Todos.................... ¿Qué pasa?

El Subjuntivo modo:

Explanation for the use of the Subjunctive Conjugation in the first sentence of the dialogue.

The subjunctive is most frequent in subordinate clauses introduced by que or another subordinating conjunction, but not all que-clauses take the subjunctive. All of these clauses fulfill one of two conditions: they either describe a potential or hypothetical situation, or else they reflect the subject's subjective or emotional reaction to a situation. Usually the main clause contains elements which condition the choice of the subjunctive. (Surprisingly, clauses introduced by the conjunction si 'if', which typically expresses a hypothetical condition, do not require the subjunctive.) (www.usna.edu)

A subordinating conjunction is a word which joins together a dependent clause and an independent clause. Subordinating conjunctions are used to join two sentences when one of them is depending on the first one. Some of these subordinating conjunctions are:

• that (que)
• although, though (aunque)
• because of (debido a)
• while (en tanto que)
• since (ya que, puesto que)
• until (hasta que)
• as (pues, como)
• as if, as though (como si)
• so that (a fin de que)
• when (cuando)
• lest (para que no)
• why (por que)
• if (si) in order that (para)
• unless (a menos que)
• although, even though (si bien) (www.spanishlanguageguide.com)

Here are some examples of the subjunctive being used in English:

The doctor recommends that he take the pills with food.
Subjunctive conjugation: he take

The law requires that you be 18 years old to vote.
Subjunctive conjugation: you be

If I were a rich man, I wouldn't have to work hard.
Subjunctive conjugation: I were

The Subjunctive in Adverbial Clauses

  1. Adverbs indicate such things as why, where, when, and how. Typical adverbs in English are words like “soon”, “here” and “quickly”; adverbial phrases are groups of words used in the same way, such as “on Sunday” or “with compassion”. Likewise, an entire clause —remember that a clause has a subject and predicate— may have an adverbial function:

John is working so that she will notice him.

[why]

John works wherever we want.

[where]

Joan works after school is out.

[when]

Joan works as rapidly as she can.

[how]

II.            Adverbial clauses are introduced by conjunctions, such as para que (so that), antes de que (before), and hasta que (until). The indicative or subjunctive mood may be required in the adverbial clause in Spanish, or an adverbial phrase (preposition plus infinitive) may be used, depending on:

  1.
    1. Whether there is a change of subject. If no change of subject is involved and a preposition exists which corresponds to the conjunction, that preposition plus an infinitive is normally used, e.g.: He's saving his money so he can buy a car, Ahorra su dinero para poder comprar un coche.
    2. The type situation or time in the adverbial clause. In general, if the situation in the adverbial clause is viewed as something hypothetical or anticipated —rather than completed, habitual, or factual— then the subjunctive is required. In contrast, if the adverbial expression deals with something that is viewed as completed, habitual, or factual, the indicative is used. Some adverbial conjunctions by their very nature deal with something hypothetical or anticipated and thus are always followed by the subjunctive; others may take either the subjunctive or the indicative.

Una vez viajé con un grupo en autobus de Bélgica a Italia. Aunque era un viaje muy largo, no fui tan aburrida. El paisaje era hermoso e hice rápidamente amigos con los otros pasajeros. Mejor de todos, la esposa del conductor preparó bien. Ella embaló una gran variedad de películas para demostrar.

I once travel with a tour group from Belgium to Italy.  Even though it was a long, long trip, it wasn't too bad. The scenery was beautiful and I quickly became friends with the other passengers.  Best of all, the bus driver's wife came prepared.  She packed a wide variety of movies to show along the way.

One time I drove alone, all night, from Toronto to New York.  I think it was 12 hours.  The horror of the drive did not begin until I arrived in Manhattan.  The morning traffic was incredible y something that I have not experienced before or since. ¿Cuál es el viaje más largo que has hecho en coche?

Viajé en Harley-Davidson moto desde Norte California hasta Houston Texas con siete amigos y luego solo hasta South Dakota y volví hasta California en agosto 2000. Un viaje mucho divertido.

Please excuse any errors in Spanish.
