Es interesante -- en español decimos:
"Voy a estar de vacaciones (plural)."
"¿Tienes algún plan? (singular)"
--mientras en inglés es al revés:
I'm going on vacation (singular)

ooo i hate that, when you get to the end of the sentence and you realise you dont have the word you need, so have to back up and come at it again from a different angle.
heres what I've discovered this morning instead of cleaning my house. :-)
wordreference.com offers "en vez de", "en cambio",and "en lugar de." for "instead"
"en cambio" seems to translate as on the other hand or by contrast which doesnt sound like what you needed.
the other two both end in "de" and , i believe, ending a sentence with a preposition is frowned upon so you probably shouldnt use them as you would in english.
Luckily, because they are both places (the beach and the cinema)
I believe that you can say
no podíamos ir a la playa, fuimos al cine en su lugar
This keeps the "instead" at the end where you needed it. i believe this works for people too i.e. "in his-her stead"
However, as i understand it ,the alternative choice needs to be included in the phrase. you cant just get away with
Fuimos al cine en su lugar. ..in whos/whats stead ?
en vez de seems to be used for choices between actions or things.
En vez de cerveza, podrias beber limonada .
Podríamos andar en vez de correr

Those were exactly my sentiments J I was constructing my sentences based on English and at one point, I just stopped. I figured I have already constructed the sentence and found it hard to reconstruct. I would also appreciate help to correct my poor grammar So in this case, should this be written as:
"entonces en vez de vamos a la playa , fuimos al cine? "
then instead of going to the beach, we went to the cinema
It sounds good to me however, if you follow the "en vez de" link to the wordreference thread one of the members writes that it may be ok to say something like this but it looks odd written down.
This degree of sophistication is way out of my league.

I'll leave it to the native speakers to comment on the colloquial correctness of the sentence, but I wanted to share a little pearl with you that has helped me many times --
When a preposition (like de, en, a, para, etc) is followed directly by a verb, the verb is always in the infinitive form.
So-- En vez de ir ....
Or, in the example in your posting, Donperigo,
En vez de correr...
Now if that is not true, I'd love to hear counterexamples (well not really -- I love this rule and it would hurt me to have to give it up! :-)

- ... DECIDIMOS ir al cine.
- ...EN SU LUGAR FUIMOS al cine.
Or simply say it in another way
- La semana pasada planeamos ir a nadar a playa pero como llovía en su lugar fuimos al cine.
- La semana pasada en lugar de (or en vez de) ir a nadar a la playa fuimos al cine porque llovía mucho.

El fin de semana que viene espero ir a una fiesta cuál tendrá lugar en "el green" a Weaverham, un pueblo pequeño cerca de Northwich. Habrá tres escenarios y numeroso orquestas y también habrá muchos otros entretenimientos para los niños. Espero que no llovería!!
