pensando más en mi historia arriba, las gallinas correrían hacia una cucaracha para comerla

se puede matar las cucarachas con agua jabonoso. no necesitas ahogarlas en un baño sólo dispararlas con una pistola de agua. 

you can kill cockroaches with soapy water  you dont need to drown them in a bath, just shoot them with a water gun.

recientemente encontré una cucaracha enorme en un caja de platanos. las mujeres huyeron como gallinas pero mi amigo juan, sin pensar en su propio seguridad, la aplastó debajo de su tacón. lo he nominado "empleado del mes" por su valentía

I was thinking more on this today and wondering if you had ordered something obviously feminine say, una televisión

would a delivery man sound strange saying "a donde quiere que yo ponga esto"and couldyou then reply "¡pongalo en la cocina por favor!". if no one has actually mentioned "la televisión" does a default non specific pronoun sound out of place. even though the guy is a tv delivery man and you both know that "it"must be La tv

there is a pa que sepas on this that discusses whether we are talking about the letter or the envelope but i cant remember the answer, nor which episode it is, sorry. I suppose that here you could both be discussing el cajón rather than the television or the driver could really mean "this piece of junk"

I suspect, that if someone uses a surprising pronoun that one would usually let it slide without comment and let context be your guide but if in doubt one can always ask for clarification. after all you dont want to open your cajón and find un radiador inside.

as i understand it, when the "it" to which you refer is ambiguous or unstated you use "lo"

similarly you can use "esto" as a non specific demonstrative pronoun "¿que es esto?" does not concern itself with whether the "it" is "la" situación or an object of unknown gender.
