If somebody sent you a message and you want to say "I understood it," would you write Lo entendí or La entendí? What is the "it" you are refering to? If it is las palabras then maybe it would be Las entendí? Or maybe it is la frase, which would make your response la entendí...

I have no idea when I respond to such phrases and want to refer to the "it" as a direct object pronoun, what the actual it is that I am referring to. I have been wondering this for ages, and haven't found an answer, so I am asking here!
