why do we use an impersonal command to wish someone good health?

I can see ;-) the invisible "I hope that" which triggers the subjunctive but ive always thought of the english phrase as a simple (blunt?)  imperative "get well soon!"

Do people say ¡mejoras! ¡ or ¡recuperas! or is that a bit rude (or just odd.) I just heard JP and Esti command you to feel better! get well! 

now i think about it more perhaps we brits are using the subjunctive, perhaps there is an implied
"verily, may it please god that you...get well soon"
Its just hard to tell with an ambiguous "get".
perhaps, to avoid confusion, we could say something like:
"would that thou beest well anon"
or does that sound just a little old fashioned?

I can tell you that your hunch is right; that imperatives are just subjunctives without the triggers.  The fact that the tú and vosotros forms vary in the directive imperative (e.g., 'hazlo, come, baila") is inherited from Latin; almost all other forms are identical to the subjunctive... might as well just come out and say it... it is the commands are a kind of subjunctive! 

Don't tell my linguist peers that I said that, I might get in trouble.
