I was guessing at - hopefully they haven\'t left already.

ie. that the drug fracas has not already dealt blow to the Mexican image that will stop the flow of tourist dollars for too long a time.

The bitter sweet part, it being a political cartoon, is the focus on image and extraneros while the population is dealing with the rising cost of the drug war.

Hey guys,

Here\'s my guess:

A: They\'re gonna clean up Miramar and make it safer... because of the tourists.

B:  Let\'s hope they never leave.

I understood it like anna8: the subjunctive imperfect of \"irse\" - \"to leave\" (\"se fueran\" - \"they leave\") expresses improbability.

By the way, I couldn\'t help but noticing that JP gave a somewhat simplified translation of \"ojalá\"; the RAE gives this translation: \"aw šá lláh\" - \"si Dios quiere\" - \"if it is God\'s will\".

Actually, let me revise that a bit:

B:  I wish they\'d never leave

(but they will -- they\'re only here for tourist season and when they go, the extra security and cleaning will go too)

anna8: So it\'s the negated statement that is improbable. Thanks, I missed that twist! :)

Recuerdo esta palabra de una de las traducciones que tuvieramos que hacer.  Creo que se puede encontrar estos exámenes en la red ahora.

kikuyu,

Creo que esto sonaría mejor:

tampoco estaba seguro de qué quisiera/quisiese decir

no estar seguro de... requiere el subjuntivo

Espero que te auyde.

kikuyu

changing the subject slightly, is ayuda one of those things that doesnt get a posessive pronoun like legs or marriage. i.e. la ayuda not su/tu ayuda

I agree with anna8, I would translate it to "i wish they'd never leave".  Due to the tense used, "se fueran", it implies that they would and do leave, but he wishes it wouldn't be the case.
