¡Me parece una elección perfecta! Por ser para adolescentes, el lenguaje debe de ser interesante pero sin demasiado complejidad y sin palabrotas. Ni que decir tiene que la autora, Isabel Allende, vale la pena. It seems to me a perfect choice!  Because it's for adolescents, the language is probably interesting but without too much complexity and without vulgar words.  It goes without saying that the author, Isabel Allende, is worthwhile.

Estoy leyendo ese libro ahora mismo. Es mi primer intento de leer en español. Tengo que admitir que engaño con una copia de Inglés para referencia.

Alexander Cold despertó al amanecer sobresaltado por una pesadilla.   Soñaba que un enorme pájaro negro se estrellaba contra la ventana con un fragor de vidrios destrozados, se introducía en la casa y se llevaba a su madre. En el sueño él observaba impotente cómo el gigantesco buitre cogía a Lisa Cold por la ropa con sus garras amarillas, salía por la misma ventan rota y se perdía en un cielo cargado de densos nubarrones. Lo despertó el ruido de la tormenta, el viento azotando los árboles, la lluvia sobre el techo, los relámpagos y truenos. Encendió la luz con la sensación de ir en un barco a la deriva y se apretó contra el bulto del gran perro que dormía a su lado.  Calculó que a pocas cuadras de su casa el océano Pacífico rugía, desbordándose en olas furiosas contra la cornisa.  Se quedó escuchando la tormenta y pensando en el pájaro negro y en su madre, esperando que se calmaran los golpes de tambor que sentía en el pecho. Todavá estaba enredado en las imágens del mal sueño.

El muchacho miró el reloj: seis y media, hora de levantarse.  Afuera apenas empazaba a aclarar. Decidió que éses sería un día fatal, uno de esos días en que más valí quedarse en la cama porque todo salía mal.  Había muchos días así desde que su madre se enfermó; a veces el aire de la casa era pesado, com estar en el fondo del mar.  En esos días el único alivio era escapar, salir a correr por la playa con Poncho has quedar sin aliento. Pero llovia y llovia desde hacía una semana, un veredadero diluvio, y además a Poncho lo había mordido un venado y no quería moverse.  Alex estaba convencido de que tenía el perro más bobalicón de la historia, el unico labrador de cuarenta kilos mordido por un venado. En sus cuatro años de vecino y ahor un venado, sin contrar las ocasiones en que lo rociaron los zorrillos y hubo que bañarlo en salsa de tomate para amortiguar el olor.  Alex salío de la cama sin perturbar a Poncho y se vistió tiritando; la calefacción se encendia a las seis, per todavia no alcazaba a entibiar su pieza, la última del pasillo.

donperigo y kikuyu: Hay varias ediciónes, ¿cuál ediciónes tenéis?  Es decir, ¿cuántas páginas tienen sus libros? There are various editions, which editions do you have? That is, how many pages do your books have?

Creo que sé por qué hay una diferencia en la cantidad de páginas. Veo que existe el comienzo de su secuela en mi versión en Inglés pero no en mi versión en español.

I think I know why there is a difference in the amount of pages.  I see that there is the beginning of the sequel in my English version but not in my Spanish version. The English version has 416 pages.

My ISBN is 0060510315  but this is a hard back.  Amazon.com says that my book also has 416 pages, but the last page number is 401.  They must count pages with the copyright info and table of contents.

It is an ancient set phrase in chinese,

and I believe it means:

"Hey! watch where you're going."

but it's about being careful when people don't pick up after their dogs.  My friend that taught in Taipei told me about it years ago.

If you drop it into the google translator, it will transliterate the characters.

Ni yo tampoco lo tengo, pero no importa.  Se puede leer los primeros capítulos online. Lo encargué el libre por correo ayer -- ¿quién sabe cuando lo voy a recibir? I don't have it either, but it doesn't matter. You can read the first chapters online.  I ordered the book by mail yesterday -- who knows when I'm going to get it?

I'm not a lawyer and know nothing about legalities.  I just found the site and thought it was interesting and would be useful. 

Hey guys, I just joined this group and had a look at the book online thanks to annajo, wow, nice find!  It'll be nice being able to read a book at the computer and having wordreference right there.

Looks like fun.

as you can see a few of us are still reading todo bajo el cielo (v good) at the moment but theres no reason why you cant make a start. we'll all read at different speeds anyway and you cant keep waiting for people to catch up.

i would have suggested that you put the page number before any quote to act as a spoiler alert but since martinillos version has more pages than mine and the online version only has 272 that probably wont work.

ooh, just had a thought. i wonder if you can get spanish spoken word books. have just checked and you can get this book , in spanish,on cassette here

Thanks for the link, Annajo, but be careful.  I noticed that they get the name of the family wrong:  "Coid" instead of "Cold."  There could be a lot of mistakes.

donperigo: Como el pdf tiene sólo 272 páginas, creo que debemos indicar las páginas de la forma "página 3/272" o "página 1/401" o algo así para que siempre sepamos a que edición referimos. As the pdf has only 272 pages, I think we should always specify the pages in the form "page 3/272" or "page 1/401", or something like this such that we always know to which edition we refer.

Pues, entonces ... podemos empezar, ¿no? Pero necesitamos un nuevo "hilo"... Well, then ... we can start, can't we? But we need a new thread...
