Groups - como se dice

I nearly froze to death in the bath last night trying to translate the following in my head,

"in order for him, to have been able, to have bought it, he would have had to have had more money."

para que él hubiera podido, haber comprarlo, habria tenido que, haber tenido más dinero

is my best effort to date. does it work in spanish? i would stand 0 chance of understanding were it not written down.

I went with "hubiera" because of the para que.. but i guess you could avoid the subjunctive with another infinitive and start with
"para que él haber podido haber comprarlo"
"haber sido poder haber comprarlo" doesnt seem quite right to me (too many to bes)

then again you could just say
le faltaba dinero para comprarlo

Sometimes it strikes me that the compound tense system must have come to us from a completely different language to the preterit-imperfect system. Does anyone know?
